Subject: How to get good science (bad metrics harm science)
The Times Higher Education Supplement (June 1, 2007) carries a number
of articles on the theme of assessment (and harassment) for
academics.  THES is at http://www.thes.co.uk/ (you need a subscriotion
to see most of it, but you can sign up for a 2-week free trial)

An extended version of my short contribution can be found at

Just wanted to say thanks for your essay on metrics at Imperial
medical school. One other piece of evidence for the overall insanity
of the system, if such a thing were needed, is that publication
targets for junior and senior staff were exactly the same (when I was
there). Not exactly the best way to encourage your up-and-coming Nobel
laureates either.

Glad that you are exposing this system to the ridicule it deserves. It
is depressing to see what a perverse effect it has on research. God
forbid that it is adopted elsewhere.
