Effingham to Urbana Amish video highlight

One of the many highlights of today's slacker Amtrak- and wind-assisted 100-miler from Effingham to Urbana (IL).

In this one-minute video we run into some traffic congestion on a country road north of Arthur in the heart of Illinois Amish country where human muscle-powered drivers encounter equine muscle-powered drivers.

Mike and Carl successfully use their rock-dodge skills to avoid riding through fresh horse poop.

P.S. This is a great one-day ride on day with strong south winds. Passenger fare from Champaign to Effingham is $7.50. Bike charge is $10, unless you have a folding bike like my Bike Friday which rides for free.

Highlights include the two-story outhouse in Gays and more encounters with Amish buggies and bikes.

I also want to get off the train some day at Mattoon, ride over to Charleston and then up to Walnut State Park and back to Urbana for a somewhat shorter ride. That ticket is only $5.

Looks like it was a fun ride. I thought of you guys a few times yesterday when gusts were particularly aggressive against the south side of my office building.

If you look to do something like this again on a weekend, I'd definitely be game for joining.

Yeah, it was a great effing ride from Effingham.

All such rides will be mentioned on ucbikeride, except if I want to get away on my own, maybe to include some packraft paddling, too.

But I don't know if they would let you on the train with your double-phallic handlebars. That looks pretty menacing and could scare kids and maybe some ladies, too!



Could also take Amtrak north on a day with north winds to Gilman or Kankakee. Train leaves Champaign daily at 1014 (or 0610 for a super early start)
