Dear OCF users,

OCF student staff have been doing a lot of work for you -- building a new
lab, adding services -- over the past 10 months. We didn't get where we
are today without a lot of help from people outside OCF. To give you a
better idea of what is going on inside OCF right now, I've decided to
forward an internal memo to all of you. It's not bad in any way, but will
give you some insight into what is (or isn't) going on internally.

We invite you to get involved with OCF, and perhaps even join staff,
during summer and fall this year. We will need more staff because our lab
is going 24-hour beginning in late August. We also have various software
projects which could use extra coders. Beyond that, we are going all out
on publicizing OCF in the near future.

I know many of you are on vacation or have graduated, and whether or not
we hear from you this summer, OCF wishes you the best of luck in your
endeavors. We hope that at least some of you can help us in ours.

Best wishes,
Kenneth Ott

Subject: OCF status update, 6/2000

Dear staff and board,

I would like to take a moment to remind you of a couple things we are
doing this week.

First, Akop will be installing Win2k on a Gateway machine moved into
our 72 barrows hall server room, and choosing which old Suns to dump into
the excess/salvage bin outside that room, this weekend. We also have a bin
in Eshleman for 3rd floor junk. If you have time this weekend to help
Akop, that's great! Also if anyone wants to meet late Friday night in
Barrows, cool.

Second, I am coordinating day to day activities in the new Heller Lab (not
much) as well as current and future OCF publicity. This amounts to the
following:
- tabling at CalSO on Mon/Thurs/Fri for an hour at noon each week;
- getting in touch with the right people to get OCF into welcome week
packets, calapalooza, and the orientation schedule (so we can put on a
campus computing services orientation -- in our new lab); and
- maintaining OCF's website.
Most days I am simply falling asleep in there with the bad air, while no
users or perhaps one user types on an Ultra5.

If you want to help out, just check my staff hours, because those are
currently the only times when Heller Lab is open at all. I especially
welcome people with knowledge about large storage systems,
solaris/unix/win2k integration, and physical security, to put in some time
over the next two months before school starts and our lab must be open.
Mine is a qualified request though -- we can't really "install" all our
gateways and suns until holes are drilled into the tables for security
cabling. In addition, some staff prefer cages to cables so that needs
discussing by a big commission. Finally, there are no motion detector
alarms in our lab yet.

I would appreciate help in the publicity field. So far it's just been Lia
and I. Actually, I will be glad to have help in ANY field. I'm a bit
desparate with two months left, including weekends, vacations, and summer
classes. I don't think we'll open by Fall 2000. That is my pessimism. I
think we can open by 2001 though, maybe.

Thanks to everyone who has helped already, and I know most of you are
doing very important "work" every day in the business and academic worlds
so it's not like I'm expecting any of you to drop those for OCF. If you
have a few hours each month to put in however, I think that can be
valuable. Please assume that we are having a work weekend every non-July4
weekend from now through late August.

Have a good summer break if we don't see you here before September!

Kenneth Ott
