MPI and shared memory on Seaborg

It looks like the default for MPI messages within a node on Seaborg
is not to use shared memory. I wonder how messages are passed then?

And this one says otherwise:

IBM's default is no, Seaborg's default is yes. Direct LAPI
programs route all messages through the adapter, however.
