I've write to you because when my system have many access to Hard Disk,
I can't use my computer.
When dpkg install a package, when poplarity-contest is executed I can do
nothing, worse sometime I can move the mouse cursor !
I use Ubuntu 11.04 on MacBook3,1 (120Go at 5400 rpm).
What can I do to fix this issue ?
Regards,
Stephane

This article may help, although I have not seen the issue and not
tried what it suggests, the comments look hopeful:-

Cheers,
Al.
Not success for me.
When I copy a big file, my system is always unusable same with
echo "deadline" | sudo tee /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler

Are there a kernel hacker here to understand this issue ?
I've already 2GB of Ram.

More likely this one:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/popularity-contest/+bug/493852
[popularity-contest will stat() every file installed file or ~80k files
on my system which grinds things to a halt ]
Why not just turn it off?
System|Administration|Synaptic...|Settings|Repositories|Statistics|untick 'Submit
statistical information'.

> Are there a kernel hacker here to understand this issue ?
It's not a kernel issue.
...
>When I copy a big file, my system is always unusable
Benchmarking and copying large files are the best way to test a system. It
should be reasonably fast, and large files should copy smoothly with no
freezes and very little slowing over time.
I always test new systems this way. Unfortunately, the problem can be
hardware or software drivers.
What kind of controller does the drive connect to? Does the drive have any
reallocated sectors as seen when you look at the SMART data?
Being a Mac, its can be a little harder to troubleshoot since Apple is a
little different than the rest.
>Do you speak about smartctl ?
Smartctl tells you everything you need to know about the health of the
drive:
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 024 Pre-fail Always - 0
9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 085 085 000 Old_age Always - 7846
196 Reallocated_Event_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0
197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0
198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 0
The drive is about a year old, and has no defects. So less to worry about...
I guess that Stéphane Klein's system finally broke... no response/feedback.

well, one can go back to figuring out how to explain NS2 installations -
for the 4th or 5th time...
Ok, I did that but my first issue isn't fixed : when I have many IO
access, my system freeze.

Stephane

I'm not overly familiar with Mac's. Can you advise on the exact model?
Is it one of these?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook
or
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MactelSupportTeam/CommunityHelpPages>
If you can do that, then it's a lot easier to search launchpad etc., for
issues.
