I want to say thank you to those who post here. I have an older dell
inspiron laptop... Windoze xp died on me and I had no clue what to do.
A friend suggested I get on this group and read..... We'll I did that
and I bought a Ubuntu user magazine w/ 9.04 (yes I know I could just
download Ubantu, but my internet is wonky). Between the magazine and
this group my lap top has new life...... It came loaded w/ totum and
a mp3 player....

-- I have a few questions for this group.... do you like vlc player
or any other multi use video player for dvds and avi's???? What Is a
good anti virus for ubuntu ? or do I just use the windows version
through WINE?

Thanks in advance

Hi Tony,
good to hear that u choose UBUNTU
welcome to the world of unlimited choise

to play videos there are so many players including VLC(my personal
fav)

please go through the list of players in one of my recent threads
http://groups.google.com/group/ubuntu-user-community/browse_thread/thread/7e517f1baec9beca

since you are using ubuntu 9.04 follow the steps below to install vlc

Open Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager).
In Settings -> Repositories,
make sure you have a "multiverse" repository activated. then click on
reload
Search for vlc and install it. You should also install vlc-plugin-esd,
mozilla-plugin-vlc (and libdvdcss2).

coming to the second part of your question
you dont need any anti-virus software in linux
this is the world of freedom, world with out windows
even if you get a virus infected file/media, feel free to open it
the virus will not effect the machine under ubuntu(linux)

have fun

I'd rather use kaffeine, but there is plenty of choice
(luckily!! :-).
Generally speaking, this kind of questions are "dangerous", because
everyone has its favourites and you risk to start a flame war.
You should try as many programs as you can and decide on your own
which suits you best.

linux does not need any antivirus. Set up a firewall (a nice gui is
firestarter), apply every security patch available and use pay
attention to superuser permits and enjoy the penguin :D

Garz,

It's very unlikely at this point that you'll get an attachment
targeting your Ubuntu computer. Anti-virus then becomes about
protecting your friends. Go to Applications -> Add/Remove search for
"virus." You'll find an anti-virus program called ClamTK, Scan files
you want to share. That's all you need to do.

Good luck,

VLC is my personal Favourite, but seeing as this is Ubuntu the choices and quality are limitless!!

All though I would suggest searching the Ubuntu forums for a guide on getting some more codecs as i found some dvd's and video files will not play through VLC (just my opinion)

And I agree with all the virus statements, but i'd go with Daniel Bo's suggestion as just because we can't get viruses (he says as he types from a windows laptop) our friends on microsofts... erm.... wonderful system can! :D

My 2 cents!
