Any plans for meetings that I cannot seem to find? I see we recently
held a successful Karmic release party. Before that there was plans
for a may meeting. Should I just start throwing ideas around for a
December meeting here?

If that is the case, lets starting

cross-posted from may

Agenda:
a. What do we want from our LOCO group?
b. Create a workable calendar of events for next 6 months based off
our stated objectives from "a" above.
c. Attempt to commit to attending the meetings and supporting the
group (Scary word..commitment but without it, nothing happens)

Discuss, please :)

In all honesty, a better way to start may be to start trying to hold regular meetings in IRC, and move to discussion about having occasional meatspace gatherings.

Thanks,

I can defiantly agree to that.

I would agree with that too, IRC meetings would be easier to attend regularly for me.

Well then giving people time to prepare: an IRC meeting in two weeks? (weekend or weekday?)

LOL... yea we did the "meatspace gatherings" with very limited success.

Weekend for me, but weekday works if it's in the evening.

OK so who's gonna send the link to "IRC for dummies" for those of who have never used it ;-)

I will post the ubuntu wiki page (very close to it) when I get back from class.

It's not much of a howto, but there was a good discussion at openweek about IRC Etiquette.  It can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeetingLogs/openweekKarmic/IRCEtiquite.

Without trying to start a "my irc client is better than yours" holy war, the basics you need to know are:
Server: irc.freenode.net
Channel: ??? TBD, but my guess would be that we would have it in #ubuntu-austin

Commands are sent to the irc server with a "/" character proceeding the command.  If you want a list of commands, type '/help'

Typically you do not need an account to login to an irc server, but you do end up having a nickname.  It should be something relatively short, and it cannot be in use by anyone else.  If you have connected to an irc server and want to change your nickname, you can do that at any time with:
/nick nickname

Another useful one to know would be /join #ubuntu-austin.  If you are not already joined to that channel, it will let you join it

An easy way to get started, as long as you have a web browser, is to use mibbit.  You probably won't want to use it forever, but it's very simple for those who have never used irc before. Just go to http://www.mibbit.com and click on the "Start chatting now" button.  From that page, click on the link that says "server" and enter the server name "irc.freenode.net".  In the "Nick" box, put in a nickname you would like to be known as on irc.  Under channel, put in #ubuntu-austin.  Then click "go".

Also, once you are connected, you might also be interested in chatting on the channel for the Texas loco.  To join it, you can type: /join #ubuntu-us-tx

Thanks,
Paul Larson

There doesn't seem to be much interest in meetings, as far as I can
tell.

I set one up earlier in the year, then had a "temporary lapse of
sanity" where I missed my own meeting.

I would still like to have a meeting in North Austin and I even had
someone create a full color 18" placard with the Ubuntu logo that says
"UBUNTU LOCO".

There were meetings at Fliptonics on Barton Springs Road; however, 2-4
people would show up and not much happened.

What may be worthwhile is creating an Ubuntu Meetup group. This would
also open up Ubuntu to a wider audience. I was a Meetup organizer at
one time. There are Linux Meetups, Joomla! Meetups, etc.

There is an Austin Linux Meetup on December 7th, for example at
http://linux.meetup.com/85/calendar/11776580/?a=fd_new_rsvp_tl

There is no Ubuntu Meetup within a 100 mile radius of zip code 78759

If there is an interest, I'll go onto the Meetup.com web site and
create a meetup group. I would ask that someone volunteer to by the
assistant (and have control of the web site) and to get help making
the site look good. We can all take photographs to be posted and even
post to a discussion forum.

This would be a great way to add some color and visibility to Ubuntu.

Anyone else is welcome to do this instead and it only cost $19 a month
to have a meetup.

ANY IDEAS OR COMMENTS FROM ANYONE?

I'm cross posting this from the Texas team forum, because honestly more people use this mailing list than people use the forum.

This was in reply to MichaelBurns dissatisfaction(here and here) to an IRC only meeting, and I kind of agree.

The IRC "meeting" is really just us coming together and brainstorming on when we want to hold a real event. I'd really like to get started on broader events (install fests and such), but first we need to see who all is on board. If we get enough response, I see no reason why a few of us can't get together and act as one in the irc discussion.

If anyone want's do do an actual get together, speak up (like MichaelBurns did), and we can get stuff going. What's a good Austin central location? I'd honestly be willing to throw up my home as a meeting point but I can't cater to large numbers, and I'm south Austin. Does Zilker park have wifi? We could meet on the UT campus I presume, there are tons of sitting areas and such, I really don't know, but I have friends who do (who would probably join the group).

So, who in the Austin area is up for a meatspace rendez vous?

wow, just realized that was thanksgiving weekend, so Saturday will be busy for me at least. I assume some sort of Normalcy will be attained by Sunday and since we have enough people that have already said okay to that weekend; I'm going to go ahead and propose the meeting to be Sunday afternoon.

This is the IRC meeting that you're talking about for Sunday Nov 22nd?  Is that correct?

As for meeting in person, I would like to have a regularly scheduled IRC meeting just to establish some consistency first.  For me I'm about to have my first child and have a 9-5 job so in person meetings are tough on a regular basis.

Sunday the 29th I'm afraid, I suggested 2 weeks on the 12, so that would be the weekend of 26th (I now realize my blunder). anyways my ideas for a meatspace meeting would not interfere with the IRC meetings, and in fact we would still meet in IRC while at the meatspace location. This is simply a chance for those who are able, to meet and greet and such.

Gotcha, I just wanted to stress the IRC meeting so that we start to have them regularly.

agreed %100. I'm starting a list of topics (thats the first one), where should I post the list? I'm thinking of making a wiki page for "Next time, on Loco Group A!" (name is a W.I.P.). I'll set it up on the wiki so everyone can have say.

I can send you the image and you can have it printed at Kinko's. If
you plan on using it much, I would recommend having it laminated for
durability. Lamination is available at Kinko's too.

I have the image archived on a CD so I'll need to go dig it up and get
it to you.
