Tabby (Katherine Guernsey), Dormouse (Liz Blankenship) and Badger
(Badger) are going under the shears on Thursday, December 10th,
shedding our collective hair to donate to the charity Locks of Love—a
nonprofit group that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged
children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
Collectively we have many years invested in this hair (over 25 years
for Badger's braid alone), and we want to get the greatest good from
cashing it in. Hence our challenge to you:
Sponsor our hair at “Dollars Per Inch,” by pledging a donation to the
Children's Inn* at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.
Children’s Inn provides a warm and supportive environment for families
when kids are being treated for illnesses such as cancer, heart, lung,
blood, bone and growth disorders, mental illnesses, and HIV infection.
Here’s how this challenge works—email me, Badger, or post a reply here
on Google Groups with your “pledge per inch” ($1, $5, $20, whatever
works for you.) We will post photos of the Great Cut to Fbook and post
them at the club, along with a documented measurement of the shorn
locks. (My best estimate is that we should yield at least 42 inches of
usable hair.) We in turn will send you information on how to send
donations directly to Children’s Inn and a personal note of thanks
from Team Menagerie. We will also report back to the Google group on
the total we have raised for this good cause.
This is a big deal for us—we are really “giving of ourselves” because
we believe in these causes. Even if you decide not to contribute, we
appreciate your support and encouragement as we take the plunge.
*The Children’s Inn at NIH opened its doors to pediatric patients and
their families. Since then The Inn has been in continuous operation:
24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. During the past 18
years, 8,684 seriously ill children and their families have made
40,000 visits to The Inn. Children and families travel from all over
the world to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) because
conventional treatments have failed to have sufficient impact on their
illnesses. Located in Bethesda, Maryland, NIH is the world's premier
biomedical research facility. Children receive treatment for illnesses
such as cancer, heart, lung, blood, bone and growth disorders, mental
illnesses, and HIV infection.
