I have inventoried a third box of hard drives that came with the supercomputer. The table below gives the total count of drives by manufacturer and capacity. In spot checking them I can say that not all are working, but then not all are bad.

I found 4 additional hard drives that have a readable OS installed on them: two contain Linux and two contain Windows.

Cheers,
Greg Walker

Hi Kirt, glad you're here.

The advantage to these old, slow, small drives is simply that they fit
on the RLX server boards we have. They are in all other ways inferior.

Parallel programming on this system is going to be *LOT* of fun and
learning!

and how soon can I set it up there?

Last month we had a great conversation about how to manage classroom
computers, settling on PXE booting for easy centralized management. PXE
booting requires (as in cannot be done without) wired networking. We
need wired networking, and the need is compelling:

- The 3D Printer controller computer is not wifi-capable; we also have
some people who bring in computers without wifi, or *would* bring in
computers if there were wired networking.
- When people start using the supercomputer for larger datasets, getting
them moved around over wifi will be painful.
- A number of people have asked about network security and segregation.
There will be parts of our network that really should not be accessible
via wireless. (IE, the MySQL server that handles the money and RFID access.)
- The playstations aren't wifi-capable.

In my opinion, we really need a good wired network setup, with *enough*
wires, labeled properly, run neatly, terminated cleanly, and
well-thought-out ahead of time.

I'm asking for donations to buy new network equipment, particularly
cable, keystone jacks, wall plates, and boxes to mount them on. I've
already got a few people lined up to sponsor boxes of cable and am
asking others to step up as well. If you can donate money, please reply
to this thread.

Thank you all.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for doing that hard drive inventory. That's a big deal.

I just posted a message to the group about the need for a wired network
at the lab. Can I talk you into sponsoring one or two boxes of cable so
we can get things set up? Right now a new 1000' spool of solid cat 6a
for installation is $125, shipped. I want to make 8 runs at a time so we
can avoid the mess we had at the old space. We will also need
terminating hardware (keystone jacks, boxes, wall plates, etc.) so
anything will help.

Thanks again,
David Nielson

David,

I will pledge $200 to cover a box of cable and additional hardware. I
trust I can get a receipt for tax purposes.
I am in La Grange this weekend, as most weekends, so cannot help
directly with the setup.
I plan to be at the labs Tuesday. We can declare it a "Supercoputer
Tuesday" since I can bring the stand-alone box. Or I will be glad to
help setup if there will be work on that evening.

You want any help setting it up? I would be happy to come by and at least
pester with questions.

As for wiring if you need any help ending wire or such I can help although
I do not have any tools in Texas for ending Cat5. Where are you planning
to order the cable?

Greg,

I really appreciate that, and I have you down for $200 towards networking gear.

For Tuesday, I'd like to focus on the gruntwork that needs to be done. There's going to be a lot of counting, moving, stacking, tracking components. We really don't have anything close to a count of what we have, and I think we need to do that before we do too much more with the software.

I'm looking at monoprice.com. They have the best price I found and it's the right kind of cable, plus it's in lots of colors which is important to me. Remember the CF that was the patching and routing at the old building... colored wiring will go a long way toward reducing confusion.

I have a crimper for RJ45 and I'm going to get one of the nice spring-loaded punchdown tools for doing patchbays and jacks. I've done them before with screwdrivers and it works but it's not worth doing that way. Get the right tool for the job. I've also got generous amounts of Velcro One-Wrap and will get more if it's needed. This *will* be done well.

Hey David, I'm not sure how much time I'll have, but I would be more than happy to come by and help run cabling and whatnot. I have a RJ45 crimper as well as a punchdown tool (not spring loaded though). Just let me know when you'll be working on it.

Are you planning on going with Cat5e or Cat6?  I know someone who runs a large online cable/parts shop, might be able to get a good deal.

David,

I am glad to hear we are ready to dig into the hardware. I will be there Tuesday evening to help and will bring the 3rd box of hard disks.

Kirt,

Welcome aboard the supercomputer project.
It will be super in the sense of being built from many (hundreds!) of
single-node boards, called blades. Each blade has relatively modest
processors and RAM by today's standards. As a platform for learning and
experimentation in cluster computing it will be fantastic.

I hope you can join us Tuesday evening for a hands-on introduction to
the project.

David,

I just paypal'd $250 for the network.

Later,

Jeff

Playing with a supercomputer sounds like fun.  Let me know if you need any help.  Are these hard drives IDE, SATA, or..... heck what's the name of it?  SCSI.  Dam, how embarrassing.  Might have to get a RFID implant to keep my hacker cred from suffering now. :/

These are old school IDE's . . .    laptop drives used in a server environment.

I figure we've got 200+ boards that are ready to rock and roll, for
which we just don't have memory. Do you have any suggestions on where to
get more? About half are P3 boards using DDR, and the rest are
Transmetas using PC-133. All the stuff we have is ECC memory. I don't
know if the boards will run on non-ECC, do you?
