Subject: Square Screws Screwed Me

Hi hackers!

I'm a Rice student in need of what could possibly be a Robertson (square)
screwdriver as shown here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#Robertson. Does anyone
happen to have any driver that fits these weird square screws? I am
planning a trip to the hackerspace next week (hopefully I'll make it to the
open house) and bring a drawer I need unscrewed with these. If you don't
have them, I would appreciate any advice on where I can find a driver like
that in Houston, from your experience.

I'm told that a security bit set might have the driver I'm looking for, if
anyone is in possession of one of these, they'd be great help.

Yours,
Carlos Sanchez

That is a very common screw used in cabinet making. You should be able to
find it in any hardware store like home depot or Lowes

Just about any multi bit set should come with square bits. Check home depot
or harbor freight.

AND, there are 3 common sizes of square bits. The MOST commonly used size
is a #2 square bit.

I am amazed that no one asked him what this screw is holding together. For myself, I'm curious. Will you tell us?

Yes, I saw that.  But it didn't tell me much.  I guess I was hoping it was something interesting like a drawer in an old safe.

Subject: Re: Square Screws Screwed Me

Wow! Thanks for all of your replies!

I saw a couple of sets online. The thing is, I'm not sure which size I
need, so I would have needed to buy the set just to ensure that I got one
that fit. But I figured that implies buying 4 square screwdrivers--which I
may never use--to lug the rest of my life. Being a student who has to move
every year to a limited space, I thought it was less practical than other
options. But its good to know they are popular around hardware stores
nearby.

The story: the screws are holding back the front cover of a drawer that I
want to turn into a keyboard tray. If I remove the front, I will then be
able to access an external keyboard from a very convenient position (that
is probably much healthier considering the amount of time I spend on this
desk). Essentially, I'm modernizing a decades-old desk to fit 21st century
ergonomic needs.

Thank you for all your quick responses, looking forward to meeting y'all
this Friday!
-Carlos
