I was surprised I didn't see AIM in the list of IM clients on the
twitter site. I looked around with google and saw some posts that made
me think there was AIM support at one time.

Are there any AIM/Twitter bridges and if not why hasn't one been
developed? Is Twitter holding out since AOL has begun supporting XMPP?
Maybe once AOL's XMPP federation issue is sorted out then the Jabber
IM setup would be all that's required.

If there's a need for AIM integration I'll work on it. One of the TOC
libraries, a server, and the twitter API would be all that's required
right? I write/maintain Java socket servers for the Healthcare
industry for a living and have a couple XMPP and AIM bots of my own
that I use so I'm not completely new to the concepts.

is AIM worth the effort?

We've had AIM support in the past, but it's been difficult to maintain for a variety of reasons.  I'm not aware of any third-party Twitter/AIM bridges.  We're planning on supporting AIM in the not-to-distant future, but it'll require changes on their end and our end.
