Due to abusive behavior we've been forced to temporarily disable our
Jabber/XMPP services. PubSub subscriptions, tweet deliver, updating,
tracking, and all other Jabber features will be unavailable until
further notice. We'll attempt to resolve this as soon as possible.
Apologies for the inconvenience.

Abusive behavior? I don't suppose you can enlighten us further?

We saw clients performing bulk actions against our system starting
earlier today. Following thousands of users, that sort of thing.

Sounds like you saw the twhirl implementation on xmpp - loic le meur
described having the new beta running via xmpp... and loic said it was
able to keep up with the number of followers he has....

sounds exactly like what you said.

Still: why is EVERYTHING ELSE down?

Thanks Alex, appreciate the update, and as always, all's hard work.

James,

Would appreciate not speculating on something like this.

Not only have we not pushed the new version of Twhirl to many folks
but we have also been very careful in our testing and have been in
contact with Al3x about it.

Twhirl is currently on *receiving* tweets via XMPP.

Bear-

apologies if it wasn't you, and i do recognize i am simply
speculating, but reading between the lines from what i saw, that's
what came up.

http://twitter.com/loiclemeur/statuses/818546104

from where i stand, twitter was down for a whole chunk of today - and
whilst no-one is obligated to provide me a service here, it's getting
somewhat tedious when the app can barely stay functional for 6 hours.

please feel free to contact me directly if you want to continue this
conversation off-list.

James, Alex said that some people were adding 1000s of followers at a time. That doesn't sound like Twhirl at all. Sounds like a crafty spammer.

This is really bad news. We almost discarded pulling the xml public_timeline feed because it is certain to loose tweets. I really hope you guys get this up and running again soon, with some kind of blacklist for spammers.

James,

No worries - just needed to "get in front of" any linking of the issue
to Twhirl. I agree that Loic's twitter was just plain bad timing
completely.

I know that my personal info stream has been beaten-up with this event
so I am also waiting for it to come back up.

Something tells me that this years XMPP Summit will be *very* busy on
this angle.

Alex,

Would it be possible for you to setup a whitelist of PubSub users for
tweet delivery? That way the developers who rely on the service would
still be able be operational.

Any idea if this is going to be a long-term thing or not?

I thought it might have been me at first, too because I've been
blasting a hundred or so direct messages at once, but all aimed at
one user, not hundreds.

It's still off, sorry. We have to be extremely conservative with load
right now because one of the critical databases is basically maxed
out.

Openfire XMPP is running now for a few pubsub consumers for testing
purposes. We're working on getting it up for all pubsub consumers and
all users as soon as possible; maybe by the end of this week.

No, we still have the same list of subscribers. We're just turning
them back on incrementally, so we can ensure that everyone is
supported with the same quality of service.
