Tokyo Experience
General experience
Tokyo is the most bustling and flourishing city in Asia. When you go to
Tokyo at first time, with an initial viewing, many streets seem similar with
Taiwan. Asia-face citizens, similar style architecture, and resembling traffic
emblem, all of these will make people have wrong sense that they are in Taiwan.
However if you observe carefully, you will find out it still has many different
things with Taiwan. The area of Tokyo is nearly 2200 km-square, but it squeezes
ten millions of persons inside the city. So small area, so many people, the city
just let people feel crowded, not chaos.
The most characteristic of Tokyo is its convenient subway and rail system
that could deliver citizens to any corner of the city below one hour. The
environment of Tokyo is not cleaner than Taiwan in result of so many cigarette
automatic selling machines and so many smoking men that occurs many
cigarette butts on ground of sidewalk. Although the garbage in Tokyo is as much
as in Taiwan, the space of pedestrian in Tokyo is better than in Taiwan. There is
no stall-man and not so many motorcycles around the sidewalks to hinder the
way of pedestrian and many roads are isolated to remain for citizens walking,
called pedestrian paradise. The air in Tokyo is fresher than in Taiwan because of
fewer motorbikes. The drivers in Tokyo are so gentle that make drivers in Taipei
seem like ruffians. Automobiles in Tokyo seldom whistle to walkers, and they
will wait quietly for walker across them.
The most general experience in Tokyo for me is expensive goods, crowded
people, strange high school girls and convenience mass traffic system. In spite
of few good experience of Japanese vendor for me before, I still remain
enjoying memory with Tokyo.
SHINAGAWA品川
SHINAGAWA is the first place where I living in Tokyo. It is not noisy and
fashion like SHINJUKU (新宿) or SHIBUYA (涉谷) and most common scenery
in Shinagawa is business offices and restaurants. The headquarters of SONY is
neighbor with here and in spite of it is not a noisy region, Shinagawa is still an
important traffic cross point in Tokyo.
SHINJUKU新宿
SHINJUKU is a famous region in memory of many people with Tokyo.
The rail station with a signboard "MY CITY" is shown in many comics like
"CITY HUNTER" and many Japanese dramas. I consider "MY CITY" is the
sign of rail station all the time until I go to find that it is not the station
signboard but the board of department store and most of the area in the "MY
CITY" building is department store. Furthermore the station is only the part of
the building underground. However the region of station underground is so large
that when we found we still inside it after walking 20 minutes. People said that
SHINJUKU station is the most busy rail station in the world. SHINJUKU
could be separate two regions, west and east, by the subway. West region of is
full of modern skyscrapers that a famous building is Tokyo City Hall where is
48 floors height. It's free to go to the top of Tokyo City Hall and you could
watch the night scenes of Tokyo. If the weather is sunny, you will see the Fuji
Mountain.
East region of SHINJUKU is different with west region where is modern,
neat and tidy. East region is business, fashion and crowded. KABUKICHO is a
famous red light districts where are many restaurants, audit video shops,
massage service, small theatres. Some people asked to Japanese vendor that how
to buy the non-covered audit VCD, but after I searched in SHINJUKU, I am
very disappointed that the quality and price of VCD in SHINJUKU is not better
than that in Taiwan. You could watch a striptease show in small theatre where
you could meet many tourists from Taiwan. There are 11 showgirls to show by
turns. Young and old, beautiful and ugly, of these girls, however young and
beautiful girls could be just watched not touched, but old and ugly girls could be
watched and touched. Although it was a red light district, I found that the
environment is not so bad that I guess before. The salesman is gentle and
couldn't force tourists to consume over there.
HARAJUKU原宿
HARAJUKU is the region that Japanese modern and tradition balance
existing peaceful here. West of HARAJUKU is the traditional region where
Meiji Shrine (明治神宮) is over there. East of HARAJUKU is the modern
region where you could find the most fashion, strangle, and weird Japanese
young people over there. Meiji Shrine is the Shrine in honor of Meiji Emperor
who had effort for Japanese modernism. Many Japanese go to Meiji to pray for
their fortune of loving or exam, especially on new year's day. You could also see
Japanese traditional wedding that groom and bride all wear kimono (和服). I
watched the wedding in winter and I thought if the wedding is in summer, it will
be very hot to newly wed. There is a large garden in the shrine where you could
find many red maple leaves.
The standard modern character of HARAJUKU is OMITESANDO(表參
道) and TAKESHITA(竹下通). OMITESANDO is named small Paris where 1
km long of street is full of many shops selling famous brand and expensive
costume and accessories. There are shrubbery and coffee sites beside the
pavement. TAKESHITA is the region belongs to young people why that seem so
like West Gate Street in Taipei. Many shops sell strange clothes and the price is
cheaper than other regions in Tokyo. You could see kinds of Japanese young
boys and girls who show them-self bravely. High school girls with yellow hair
wear school short skirt to go shopping though the day is not to go to school. The
hair and face of girls are full of different colors so that they seem like west
foreigners.
GINZA銀座
GINZA is like its name of galaxy in the sky. I went to GINZA in the
evening when the neon lamp in the street and in the shop just started to shine.
People in GINZA wear so formal that the fur coats and leather shoes are basic
person's wardrobes. The main road in GINZA is closed for citizen to walk,
called pedestrian paradise, and there are many street shows, like music shows,
and puppet shows. Many decorated shops and famous department store are
beside the road. However I am not interested in clothes shops, so the department
stores in GINZA seem the same with that in Taiwan for me. Besides the area of
store in Taiwan in larger than in Japan.
SHIBUYA(涉谷)
SHIBUYA is also a bustling area in Tokyo. Many department store and
bookstores are in this region. Japanese is a race of reading, and you could find
many people reading books in streetcar. The area of department stores in Japan
is not larger than in Taiwan, but area of bookstores in Japan in larger than in
Taiwan. When I went to Hong-Kong, it's hard to find any bookstore in street,
but there are many bookstores which is 5 floors area in SHIBUYA. There is a
famous business building "109" where you could meet many hot girls appeared,
called 109 hot girls, but maybe the day is not the day, I couldn't find many hot
girls.
AKIHABARA(秋葉原)
AKIHABARA is a famous electric appliance street. I had heard about that
people could buy many cheap electric appliances in AKIHABARA before I
went to Japan. However I also felt disappointed that I found the price was not
very cheaper. You can buy the newest Japanese electric appliances in
AKIHABARA, but the price is not let me to feel value. Cell-phones are the most
popular goods in AKIHABARA, but the system is different with Taiwan.
Although the shape of Japanese cell-phone seems beautiful and variety, we
could only to watch. There are also many computer components made in Taiwan
like ACER notebook or ASUS motherboard in AKIHABARA, but the price is
more expensive than that in Taiwan.
TOKYO TOWER(東京塔)
It is also famous position in Tokyo. There are two observatories in Tokyo
tower. Bottom of the tower is restaurants and shops. You should buy one ticket
to achieve the low observatory, and if you want to achieve higher observatory,
you have to buy another ticket. Although the ticket price was expensive, I
thought that maybe it's the only time in my life, so I still to get to higher
observatory. Rainbow bridge shown in many Japanese dramas could been
watched in observatory of Tokyo tower.
IMPERIAL PLACE(皇居)
I went to imperial place by rail to Tokyo Rail Station which is the traffic
cross point of Tokyo city. The appearance of Tokyo station seems like Tai-
Chong rail station that is an old building. The building upper-ground of Tokyo
seems not very large, but the underground part is a small city that has all kinds
of shops.
Imperial place is in the千代田區 that don't has many shops but many
banks, offices and government organizations. Citizen is not allowed into the
imperial place, so we could only go around the region around it. However it is a
large green area in a metropolis. There are many crows in Tokyo especially in
parks.
ASAKUSA SHRINE(淺草寺)
It's a historical shrine in Japan, like Long-San shrine in Taipei. The gate of
the ASAUSA SHRINE, KAMINARIMON GATE (雷門)is sometimes more
famous than the shrine itself and it make many tourists consider that
KAMINARIMON GATE is an independence travel position. There is a large
and heavy lantern written 雷門 in the top of gate. It's a traditional point for
tourists to photo when they go to Tokyo.
