Without making any judgments of quality, two things are obvious: Joss
Whedon does not do mass appeal television. And Fox stopped being a
niche network somewhere in between getting the NFL and MLB and "Idol"
taking off.

If I were Kevin Reilly, I'd make this deal: Give an episode of
"Dollhouse" an "Idol" lead-in. Have Seacrest plugging it going into
every break. Have Simon, Dawg, Kara and Ellen gushing about how much
they love the show. Generally promo the hell out of it. If it kills
in the ratings after "Idol," keep it on. If it bombs, kill it for
good.

To what purpose? Whedon appears to be a cult personality with a not-
big-enough following to justify throwing good money after bad. If it
were, say, David Kelley or Bochco or even Sorkin, I'd say yeah, but is
Whedon that big of a deal?
