It is one thing to read about the unemployment rate (10.8% here in California, last I checked). What I have noticed about this recession is that almost literally 1 in 10 people that I know have lost their job, or have graduated from college and not been able to find a full-time job. The only encouragement I can offer is that, in the teeth of this recession, and perhaps because of how closely we have all been touched by it, I also know lots of people who have lost their job, and then found another one. My sister was laid off 9 months ago, went through 4 months of terrifying hell, and then found another job in her field (though for lower salary than before). So people are hiring, and I think what we have noticed is that canny employers are kind of 'buying on the dip" - knowing that there are an unusually high number of well-qualified workers in the unemployed population right now, that can be had for a relatively cheap price and can be long term assets. If I were a decision-maker at a fundamentally strong organization, I would invest in hiring qualified people now, even ahead of a full recovery, because it talented employees are often the most difficult thing for an organization to find.

Even though I have tenure I came uncomfortably close to losing my job this month, and spent some time looking into the maw of unemployment in this environment. Not a pretty picture. I am sure I join the entire list in keeping a good thought for you Kevin.

Thanks PGage. It is probably unfair of me to post these clearly
off-topic YouTube clips, and if people complain I shall cease. But
when I was laid off in 2010 it took me six months to find a job. This
time around I have 30 days, so I'll pulling out all the stops here.
I've applied to people both off-the-wall and odious. I'm networking
with people I can't stand. As the 1 in 10, I'm aware of the situation.
Maybe this is the fact I've been back in Hollywood for 18 months, but
I don't have the luxury of scruples right now. I need an LA-based job
that pays at least $45k a year -- if crack dealers were on LinkedIn,
I'd apply to be a mule.

Kevin...
This probably won't be of much use to you, since it is outside of the main skill sets you have identified, but under the heading of "it couldn't hurt", I am passing along an email we got from the American Psychological Association today alerting us that the VA is in the process of ramping up its mental health workforce, and will be adding 1,600 people between now and the end of the year. This probably mostly refers to psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and RNs, but I used to work for the VA, and I know they do sometimes hire people with demonstrable skills (perhaps in teaching or technology) in various mental health settings. If it does not apply to you directly, it may be an information asset that you can contribute as you network with other job seekers.

******************************************

"The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has prioritized a new program to hire approximately 1,600 new mental health professionals.

Veterans Affairs is implementing an “aggressive national recruitment program” to add some 1,600 mental health professionals including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and nurses to its workforce.

APA member Antonette Zeiss, PhD, the chief consultant for the VA Office of Mental Health Services, described the initiative as an “unparalleled effort” by the VA to expand its mental health workforce rapidly.

The VA described the recruitment as a top priority after a review of operations found that some VA facilities require additional mental health staff to meet the growing needs of veterans. The VA has already filled several hundred of the positions, with the number of newly hired mental health professionals increasing daily. The agency has said it anticipates selecting the majority of new hires by the end of 2012, and will continue assessing its staffing needs. The VA’s current mental health workforce is 20,590."

It's been FOREVER since I've looked at these e-mails and groups.
Since I no longer I have a job, now I have the time (but I'm not sure
if I enjoy that). I'm sorry you're unemployed. I was "separated"
from my former company almost two months ago. Ugh. And I'm 20 weeks
pregnant. Awesome. I have no idea how to look for jobs these days.

Sorry to hear you are also unemployed Jenny. If you want to message me
your resume privately or add me on LinkedIn, I'll offer as much advice
as I can and try to steer you in as many directions as I can to assist
you (been my experience one direction isn't enough). Congrats on the
pregnancy however. I'll be praying for you.

"Yes" to both questions. I found my current job at
http://www.usajobs.gov and really I lucked out getting it for many
reasons. Not to scare you, but I went about 26 months without a job
after I graduated law school in May 2005. Now, we were ok because my
wife was working, but I was out of school loan deferments and we'd had
our daughter in December 2006. Being "ok" wasn't going to last much
longer.

Then some random day in late June I got a phone call from the head of
the office asking if I was still looking for a job and he offered it
to me right then, no interview. It was like God knew it was time to
ease off on the 46-year-old fatboy because I know I was hurting myself
when I interviewed. Then when I started working, I soon found that
there was no better job for my personality and background, at least no
better job that doesn't exist in a fantasy world where I play video
games and read comic books for a living, but I digress.

Apply and see what happens. I will say that there might be a long
time between applying and being contacted. When I received the phone
call I didn't remember applying, but I was applying for so much that
everything blurred together.

I wish you luck and you find something sooner than later.

Go for it, Kevin.

Seeing what happened to my sister (let go after working for the same company
for 11 years) and several friends with similar stories, I know how fortunate
I was that I made the decision to take a job with the federal government.
Good salary, interesting work, regular hours, health insurance -- and the
dreadful bully I had to endure for the last 10 years at NSF couldn't fire
me. It was the best decision I've made (I had another, more attractive job
offer in the private sector at the time I took the federal job -- after
being unemployed for 19 months), and now that I'm retired (at a younger age
than anyone else I know), I shouldn't have to worry about finances for the
rest of my life.

By all means apply, but, as Greg noted, don't be surprised if it takes a
while to hear anything.

Best of luck to you, Kevin.
