Uruguay might change DVB for ISDBBrazil offered Uruguay USD 40 millions with the purpose of Uruguay's stepping back in its digital TV standard DVB choice and choosing the Brazilian-Japanese standard ISDB. According to the local media, last week, the elect president, José Mujica, made reference to that fact that, at the beginning of his term, the country will have to define whether the selected standard is changed or the European standard remains.
The new Ministry of Industry Sub-secretary, Edgardo Ortuño, told El País newspaper that the agreement with the European Union had not been executed yet and that "Uruguay will choose the most convenient models". Brazil's intention is aimed at Mujica's, who took office on March 1st, revising the agreement with the EU, with whom the former state leader, Tabaré Vázquez, had committed himself.
Last week, the Minister of Communications of Brazil, Hélio Costa, together with several advisors, exposed ISDB's advantages in Uruguay. In the region, Venezuela, Argentina, Chile and Peru have turned to ISDB; whereas, Colombia, Panama, French Guyana and Dutch Antilles have chosen DVB.
