I am a current and happy user of TG 1.01b and TurboMail 2.03. I have
noticed an intermittent issue with TurboMail when it interacts with a
certain slow SMTP server, and I thought I'd toss this out and see if
anyone else had seen it before, and might have some ideas.

Note, this is all very low volume and small sized messages discussed
here. The rest of the TG environment is described more fully below.

95%+ of the time, TurboMail works great within my mostly Linux
environment. However, from time to time, messages simply do not get
sent out, even though from all appearances, the TG application is
running fine, and nothing is visibly hung. If I restart the
application, sometimes it fixes it, sometimes it does not fix it.

When I telnet the the SMTP server by hand, I note that from time to
time, it responds to commands very very slowly.

It makes sense to me that TurboMail is spawning a thread to handle the
message sending chore, and that this thread is dying at some point
based on the high latency in the mail server it is speaking to.

So, my best guess is that I need to either get the IT manager to fix
his SMTP server (someday!), or I need to make TurboMail more patient.
There appears to be some timeout related stuff in module
turbomail.pool, but for some reason, this has not been exposed that I
can tell. Is this a logical place to play with timeouts in TurboMail,
or can someone point me to a better one?

Much Thanks,

- MichaelG

Have you tried setting the mail.debug config parameter?  This should help you verify that slowness is the problem, rather than some other issue.

It might also give you some clues as to where the slowness is happening, and whether its happening at the web level or deeper (TCP, etc.)
