By default dreamweaver will not open a kid template file let alone treat it as html.  It would be really nice if there were a filetypes dialog like eclipse has, but this is not the case in my version ( 7.0).  However, a type can be added, but its a little tricky for windows users because the controlling files can live in multiple places.  Not sure, if Macromedia or Microsoft is to blame for that one (they can split the trophy down the middle perhaps).

Control Files:  Configuration\Extensions.txt and Configuration\DocumentTypes\MMDocumentTypes.xml
Technote:       http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_16410

The technote talks about editing them, but if you don't get them in the right place, you will not see any effect.  This is somewhat of a pain.

On Windows these files reside wherever you installed dreamweaver and in your Applications Data directory
For example:
Place #1:    C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX 2004\Configuration
Place #2:    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX 2004\Configuration

The process is well described in the tech note.  I tacked on KID to the places where HTML was located an voila I could edit the files in dreamweaver as if they were HTML.

Peter,

Thank you very much,

Worked like a charm. I have started using nvu, but this lets my drop
back to dreamweaver.
