Hi
I am thinking of really taking the plunge and searching for a
publisher that would accept the Tufte layout. My book would be a
textbook for general education in physics, based on a course I've
invented on particle physics and cosmology for non-science students.

So many of the big-time publishers have their own latex styles and
want to stick with them, I'm wondering how one pursues the layout that
one wants.

Obviously, I've not written a book before and even though my research
is still very active, I can see that if I don't do this now in my
60's, I'll never do it.

thanks
Ray

I would also recommend looking at

https://www.createspace.com/

It's a part of Amazon. I've used Lulu too, but right now I am testing out creatspace. Here's my Amazon listing:

Hi Ray,
To answer your question outside the realm of self-publishing: I just published a textbook with CRC Chapman/Hall (Taylor & Francis) using the tufte-latex style. While they gave us templates, I really did not like them and luckily our editor really liked the tufte look. In contrast, in a book that I published earlier with Wiley, I had to really twist the arm of the editor to move away from their standard (terrible) format. Some editors just don't understand the importance of a beautiful, readable style.

The bottom line is that it depends on the editor, even if you are with a big publisher. You might want to negotiate this into your contract.

Galit
P.S. - I also self-published 3 textbooks using createspace (and the tufte-latex style) and I can highly recommend the experience.
