Folks,
What’s this? QR (Quick Response) codes are, basically, 2 dimensional bar codes. They can be read by smart phones. With one quick scan the QR code can tell someone all the details on a contact card, an email address, web site, phone number etc. It not only relays information but it can open the website, phone the phone number, email the email address and even send a text message via SMS…. The kids are going to love this so I have generated a set of such codes for us to use and they are attached to this email.
How can we use them? Simply print the required code on a poster, leaflet, tshirt or even put it on a web page where a smart phone user might see them. For example, when we want to point someone at the Food-on-our-doorstep web site then they can scan the code “Food-on-our-doorstep-website_10_L.jpg” and our Food Guide opens on their phone.
Why bother? Well, smart phones have now become common. QR codes save people having to write information down. It is like an electronic leaflet. You will get a lot more interest from folks of the younger generation if they can just scan your code! Clearly they will be of no interest to anyone without such a device but that is why we need all the other goodies such as leaflets, honey, bread, posters, banners, etc., as well.
Notes:
Most of the enclosed QR codes are for web sites so have the word “web” in the title. Others are for “Email” or “Contact Card”. You should find everything here – all our project pages, the Facebook pages, the Google Groups and Twitter. I have included Warm Home Heroes, Energy Saving Kits, Wycombe Homepower, Cocoon, Energy Champions, Food Champions, Baregardens, Superhomes and Local Roots. Phew! Have I missed anything? Let me know.
Obviously we wouldn’t use all of them at once but certainly if we wish to point people at the online FOOD Guide then this code can be printed on the hardcopy update sheets.
(Don’t worry about the reference to “10_L” – this is just a techie-standard for the code.)
So – smart phone users - Please feel free to test these codes and let me know if they don’t work. I have tested them on by Blackberry and they work for me so far….

And – no! – you don’t have to be young to have a smart phone. (Thanks Ivan.) We are all young at heart.
