"ever since we have been in the New York times (that was followed up on
by various media) I have received lots of calls and e-mails from people
who are ‘troubled by a lockpicker’. The story all these people tell is
more or less the same and basically boils down to this: there is a
lockpicker who picks the lock of their house, goes inside and does
nothing but just move the furniture a little or leave subtle clues they
have been inside. And all people who contact me have one burning
question: What lock should I buy to keep this evil lockpicker out. *sigh*"

Just some things to consider:

1. covert (illegal) investigation

2. gaslighting and/or attempt to destabilize the personality

Gaslighting refers to an old movie where the villain tormented the victim by adjusting the gas lights though out a house to slowly drive the victim insane.

The mentally ill often seize on the movie or the method to claim that they are important enough that "someone" is gas-lighting them for some nefarious purpose, and alternately they will launch off on some fantasy about being the victim of a gang stalking when they claim that people are looking at them funny or that a floor bard in their house squeaks a certain way.

Most of the people who claim that they are being gang stalked of gaslight/lamplit/lime lighted actually are is bad need of psychiatric help.

Sadly, people with mental health issues tend to form groups that result in their delusions feeding off of one another, and they frequently view fictional movies and books as some form of documentary. They will often seek out an explanation of their irrational behaviors and thought and tend to gravitate only towards those things/people/theories/movies that "prove" that they are not mentally ill, and deny or push away any mention that they are actually having thought and behavioral disorders.

That is a pretty good description of religion. And its enduring power is
to institutionalize delusions, demons, sacred text, icons, costumes,
elaborate structures, dictates of behavior, and not least, raising of
bountiful funds for its preservation, and in too many cases, war on
its competitors and defilers.

It is also not healthy to remind believers of their madness for without
the calming narcotic of faith humans become animals.

Distinguishing between good delusions and bad ones is a pretty
lucrative industry too, and has built a lot of looney bins and nice
homes for those who run them. Worked in a few myself, got the
heebie jeebies seeing mirrors of my private convictions.

Don't provoke me to get started on patriotism. Been hypnotized
and terrorized by that too.

Gaslighting refers to the manipulation of one's environment to destabilize the personality. Several books are out with this in the title, see amazon.com...wikipedia below

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaslighting

Gaslighting is a form of intimidation or psychological abuse in which false information is presented to the victim, making them doubt their own memory and perception. The classic example of gaslighting is to change things in a person's environment without their knowledge, and to explain that they "must be imagining things" when they challenge these changes. Popular usage of the term can be traced to at least the late 1970s.[1]

The term derives from the 1938 stage play Gas Light, in which a wife's concerns about the dimming of her house's gas lights are dismissed by her husband as the work of her imagination, when he has actually caused the lights to dim. His action is part of a wider pattern of deception in which the husband manipulates small elements of his wife's environment, and insists that she is mistaken or misremembering, hoping to drive her to insanity.
