Subj: [t271_parents:349] Fwd: Northern Tier Canoeing Adventure
The boys saw and heard about the Northern Tier Canoeing adventure at troop meeting tonight. The Northern Tier is a high adventure base in the Boundary Waters area of Minnesota, one of the three top destinations in BSA (the others are Philmont and Sea Base on the Gulf of Mexico). Mr. McHenry showed some awesome scenery and described the challenges involved in this fantastic adventure. Northern Tier is to canoeing like Philmont is to backpacking – it’s the best it gets, and it’s truly a lifetime adventure. Just like Philmont or a Sierra Trek, this is the top event of water travel. More information is available from http://www.ntier.org/BeforeYouArrive_WildernessCanoeTrips.html or google Boundary Waters.
The troop is sending some number of crews to the Northern Tier this coming summer in early August, 2010. A crew is two adults and up to 6 boys. Participation is for Scouts between 13 (by the time they arrive) and 17 years old, with canoeing and swimming merit badges, and strong enough to carry a canoe or an 80 pound pack between lakes (up to a mile, but usually less – some 10 feet). So it requires a certain amount of strength and dedication. We’ve planned several fun canoeing and kayaking outings over the coming year to get the boys into shape for it. Adults are welcome, and will also need to meet the merit badge requirements and physical fitness demands.
We’ll be flying to Minneapolis, driving to Ely, and then canoeing into the wilderness. BSA supplies much of the gear (including canoes, tents, stoves, etc.), all the food, and a guide. Cost of the entire trip for 6 to 10 days (depending on what the crews choose) ranges from $900 to $1100 per person.
For any boy or adult choosing to go on the Northern Tier adventure, a deposit of $200 is due by September 22, 2009. The deposit is, unfortunately, non-refundable (transferable, though). The balance of the total is due by end of April, 2010. (Note that camperships are available and numerous fund raising opportunities are available over the year where the Scout earns dollars into his Scout account that can be applied to this.)
Sign-up sheet will be on the table outside troop meeting or email me; checks (payable to BSA, Troop 271)can be turned in there, or mailed to the troop treasurer, Amanda Chin, 13368 Wyngate Point, San Diego, CA 92130 or handed to me. Make sure you indicate who they are for. Indicate preference for how many days. I’ll broadcast that decision before I send in the reservation check.
