Wouldn't they have to kill the heroine every five minutes or so to stay
true to the original?

Since when was "staying true to the original" any part of a Hollywood
agenda? Not to complain, I've enjoyed most of the "comic" movies that
have come out in the last few years. But I acknowledge that each one
has had SOME major changes in the characterization/storyline in
translation from page to screen.
