WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Clinton Tuesday presented a
Congressional
Gold Medal to Rosa Parks, a black seamstress who sparked the civil
rights
movement in America in the 1950s by refusing to give up her seat on a
bus to
a white man in Montgomery, Alabama.
The frail, 86-year-old Parks received the medal in a ceremony in the
ornate
Rotunda of Washington's Capitol building, attended by scores of
dignitaries,
politicians, black members of Congress and civil rights leaders.
The woman who came to personify the phrase ``quiet courage'' and widely
seen
as the mother of America's civil rights movement, joins Nelson Mandela,
Mother Theresa and Frank Sinatra as a recipient of the most prestigious
civilian award granted by the U.S. Congress.
Clinton, who grew up in segregated Arkansas, said Parks' legacy is ``in
many
ways the quintessential story of the 20th century -- a time of trials
and
tribulations which still fundamentally is the story of the triumph of
freedom, of democracy over dictatorship, free enterprise over state
socialism, tolerance over bigotry.
``We should all remember the powerful example of this one citizen,'' he
said.
In the 1950s, Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, was a city of black
maids
and white gentry, where blacks were required to sit in the back of
buses.
Parks' solitary act of defiance on Dec. 1, 1955, resulted in her arrest.
It
also set off an extraordinary chain of events: a court challenge to the
constitutionality of Alabama's laws; a bus boycott that gave prominence
to
the young Martin Luther King; and the eventual collapse of
institutionalized
segregation in the American South.
``Rosa Parks said, 'I didn't get on that bus to get arrested. I got on
the
bus to go home,''' said Clinton. ``In so many ways Rosa Parks brought
America
home to our founders' dream.''
Accepting the honor, Parks said in a statement that efforts to end
``racism,
poverty, sexism, poor housing and poor education'' should go on. ``I
celebrate with the United States Congress and the president ... the
attention
given to those areas and ask you to work harder,'' she said.
In January, Clinton invited Parks to attend the State of the Union
address as
his guest. He recognized her publicly then by observing that for most
Americans alive today, the struggle against segregation began in the
South
``when a woman called Rosa Parks sat down on a bus in Alabama and
wouldn't
get up.''
Recommending the medal for Parks earlier this year, the U.S. Senate
described
her as ``a living icon for freedom in America.''
Ten women, including seven African-Americans, are among the 250 people
to
have received the Gold Medal. The first recipient was George Washington
in
1776.

It is interesting that the whole thing started over a dispute concerning
the issue of whether a person's relative degree of pigmentation was a
criterion which could justify forcing a woman to give up her seat to a man
on a public bus for transportation in which both had paid exactly the same
fare. It continued with the Montgomery Bus Company fearing backruptcy,
since most of their customers were black, and the police department trying
to force its former black customers to use it vy harassing and fining
blacks who decided to walk or car-pool to work rather than give their
hard-earned money to a company that thought it was within their rights to
humiliate them and give them less value for the same money.

It's obvious that the Montgomery bus boycott involved a conflict between
people making proper use of their rights, specifically the right to a seat
in public transportation and the right to walk or drive to work, and people
who were making improper use of rights, i.e. by arresting a woman for
refusing to yield her seat to a man, and by fining people for walking or
driving to work instead of paying to use transportation provided as a
commercial service by a privately-owned company.

Whites, it could be argued, have an historically demonstrated
predisposition to control everyone with whom they come into contact by
fear, and to steal everything they can by violence or stealth. The killing
of 60,000,000 people of their own race in the Soviet Union, another
12,000,000 in Nazi Germany, the ethnic cleansing of North America and
Australia, the enslavement of more than 15,000,000 Africans, and the theft
of the natural resources of Africa and a good part of Asia, would seem to
indicate that whites, left to do what they want without the fear of the
wrath of dsarker races or the morality imposed by a religion of arguably
partially non-white origin, would kill off or enslave everybody and grab
all the natural resources for themselves. Which race, when all is said and
done, has had the greatest impact for evil on the earth? Which is the only
race that has developed the extermination of other races and the ethnic
cleansing of entire continents into an art form? When the day comes to hand
out awards to races for cruelty, both intramurally and the extramurally,
past and present, the white race will take all the honors.

person had an intense aversion to the physical proximity of Negroes (and
far more so) to physical contact with Negroes.
The Liberal will argue that this "should not" be so; but the fact
remains that it WAS so and (IMHO) still is.
A nation's laws must have as their object the comfort, convenience and
well-being of the majority. This country has had its bellyful of
Jew-lawyer palaver about 'rights.'
It is with all of the above in mind that I argue that a physical
separation would be in the best interests of both races.

Unbelievable! I thought I left pure white racism of the late '50s and
'60s when I left the South. But, I see it lives and breaths in New
Hampshire.
By your argument, we'll have to take your rights away, since you are
clearly unable to make proper use of them. And, for that matter, you

Amazing to me that you would *actually* admit to wanting blacks to
go back to the situation they had in the '50s. You either have

You miss the point. The point of the story was that Jesse Jackson
specifically said he was relieved that it was a "WHITE MAN" behind him.
He could have said "older guy", "young woman", "small child", etc., but
he specifically brought race into the matter. Words have meaning. He
said he was ashamed that he, too, feared his black brothers!
Have you ever heard Chris Rock's HBO special? There is a 10 minute
diatribe against "Niggers" in it. The audience, virtually all African
American persons, laughed and cheered him on! He was saying, in a
more humorous way, what Jesse Jackson said in all seriousness.

Statistically, you're most likely to be accosted by someone of your
own race. Part of that is due to living patterns. Most whites live near
other whites, black near blacks, hispanics near hispanics, etc. Your most
likely victimizer is a male between 15-25 years of age, though the lower
limit is decreasing. In black-on-white/white-on-black crime, a white
person is much more likely to be victimized by a black person than a black
person is to be victimized by a white person (based on relative numbers
of white and black person in American society).

I was entirely in favour of the Civil Rights legislation of the late
1940s. It has turned out to be a tragic mistake, just as it was a tragic
mistake to confer citizenship on blacks after the civil war.
That whites and blacks can ever live together peacably on a basis of
political and social equality is an impossibility. Jefferson and Lincoln
and others of our great men tried to warn us of this - but of couse we
knew better.
The things that matter to me are (a) that our white Euro heritge is
preserved and (b) that whites are physically safe. NOTHING ELSE MATTERS
TO ME.
Any time blacks find conditions here impossible for them, they are free
to leave. We owe them nothing.

realize it was a tragic mistake, just as I realize that granting thenm
citizenship was a tragic mistake. There is no possiblity that the two
races will ever live together peacably on a basis of political and

The 1955 Montgomery bus boycott was started by Rosa Parks, a 43 year old black
seamstress, who was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give

community met at the Dexter Ave. Baptist Church to discuss this issue that
Rosa started. Among the leaders was the young minister, Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.
The leaders organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which would deprive the bus
company of more than half of its income, and it had cost Dr. King a $500
fine or 386 days in jail. So he decided to pay the fine, and eight months
later, the Supreme Court decided, based on the school segregation cases,
that bus segregation violated the constitution. Under the new rule buses
could no longer discriminate against blacks.

Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott
On the 1st of December 1955, Mrs. Rosa Parks, a African-American
seamstress, was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama for not standing and
letting a white bus rider take her seat.
It was an "established rule" in the American south (at that time) that
African-American riders had to sit at the back of the bus.
African-American riders were also expected to surrender their seat to a
white bus rider if it was needed.
When asked to move to let a white bus rider be seated Mrs. Parks refused.
She did not argue and she did not move. The police were called and Mrs.
Parks was arrested.
Mrs. Parks was not the first African-American to be arrested for this
"crime." But she was the first to be arrested who was well known in the
Montgomery African-American community. She was once the secretary to the
president of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People).
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church
in Montgomery. He and other African-American community leaders felt a
protest of some kind was needed. A meeting was called and an overflowing
crowd came to the church to hear his words. Dr. King told the crowd that
the only way they could fight back would be to boycott the bus company.
On the morning of Dec. 5, the African-American residents of the city
refused to use the buses. Most walked, those few with cars arranged rides
for friends and strangers, some even rode mules. Only a very small number
of African-Americans rode the bus that day.
Dr. King and the other African-American community leaders held another
meeting to organize future action. They named their organization the
Montgomery Improvement Association and elected Dr. King as its president.
As the boycott continued the white community fought back with terrorism
and harassment. The car-pool drivers were arrested for picking up
hitchhikers. African-Americans waiting on street corners for a ride were
arrested for loitering.
On January 30, 1956 Dr. King's home was bombed. His wife and their baby
daughter escaped without injury. When Dr. King arrived home he found an
angry mob waiting. Dr. King told the crowd to go home.
"We must learn to meet hate with love" he said.
The boycott continued for over a year. It eventually took the United
States Supreme Court to end the boycott. On November 13, 1956 the Court
declared that Alabama's state and local laws requiring segregation on
buses were illegal. On December 20th federal injunctions were served on
the city and bus company officials forcing them to follow the Supreme
Court's ruling.
The following morning, December 21, 1956, Dr. King and Rev. Glen Smiley, a
white minister, shared the front seat of a public bus. The boycott had
lasted 381 days. The boycott was a success.

in 'Negro Crime': a woman arrested for not giving up her seat, Dr. King
arrested for conspiring to deprive a bus company of its income and
customer base, hundreds of people fined and manhandled by the police for

operating car pools.

loitering.
Walking is a repetitious activity, and the boycott lasted for more than a

freedom and African colonization. For example, he stated in one of
the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates:
"I will say, then, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of
bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the
white and black races - that I am not, nor ever have been in favor
of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to
hold office, nor to inter-marry with white people; and I will say in
addition to this that there is a physical difference between the
white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two
races living together on terms of social and political equality."
Lincoln further stated in the Lincoln-Douglas debates, specifically
on the subject of repatriation of those of African descent to
Africa:
"Such separation, if effected at all, must be effected by
colonization... ...what colonization most needs is a hearty will...

same time favorable to, or at least not against, our interests to
