Nice writing, however, I believe you are "preaching to the choir". We as cyclists know what you are speaking of, most of us live it daily.
May I ask that you take a few minutes to reformat your writing into a letter to the editor and send it to ALL local newspapers, not just dailies like the News & Record and Winston Salem Journal, bit also the Rhino Times AND the NW Observer.
I think you've made some excellent points, speak from experiences, and I think getting the word out to drivers would be better that venting to your fellow cyclists.

Tony, I couldn't agree with you more. My husband and I moved here in 2009 just before David Sherman was killed. We have ridden extensively in Arkansas, Kentucky and Kansas but nowhere compares to the accidents and deaths that we have heard of here in NC. There is something fundamentally wrong. No clue what can be done about it except to move to where it's safer.

Thanks, I agree but we need advocacy with all parts of the system. There are leash laws which are not enforced, etc. Put this to your local representatives and ask them to step up for all of us.

My ire is bit up right now, having ridden today and nearly hit twice-
once by a driver who passed me and then turned right in front of me;
the second by a driver coming toward me, clearly saw me, and turned
left at an intersection when i had right of way.
i've ridden in NY, CT, KY and IN. Nowhere have I seen a rash of
incidents like this.
We, as a group, need better organization on this. I tried to lobby our
state rep last year to get behind and duplicate the Colorado law
providing cyclist a space on the road. Not surprisingly, i got nowhere
with her.
we need to do a better job advocating for better laws for us,
enforcement of those laws when they are broken, and advocating for our
own safety

That is terrible. I do think cars under anticipate how fast bikes are so some of it may be ignorance but well worth educating. But cyclist again need to follow all laws. They can't sneak between cars or through a red light. The drivers are having the same attitudes. I've driven, passed cyclist to have them catch up at a stop light and be in front again. We must wait our turns as well. We should also pick roads that are safer. Continuously cycling on busy roads isn't going to change anything fast but will get someone killed. But if there is a way to educate cars that cyclist have the same rights, we follow the laws then I'm all for it
