Mike Turner’s Saturday rides to Stokes/Surry County start this Saturday – see below. They usually average about 17 mph from start to finish, but it is slower in Stokes County with some tough hills. They usually regroup at stop signs, etc. and take a rest break at the Hanging Rock or Pilot Mt. visitor center. Sometimes the group splits up on the way back in to accommodate different paces.

Subject: Saturday ride to Hanging Rock from Oak Ridge Park
Hello All, I hope the mild balmy winter we had didn't spoil you. Eventually we'll have a tough winter. I saw daffodils blooming while I was out riding today and the flowers reminded me of a funeral, which brought Hanging Rock to mind. That's because each spring my first visit back to the cycling nirvana known as Stokes County usually becomes a death march for me. But it's time to get back up there and enjoy Pitzer Rd. ( Ahhh...), Hanging Rock Rd ( ooohhh...) and those wonderful little hills on 89 between Danbury and Hwy 8 as we head home. I'm getting misty eyed, I hope some of you will join me on my trip down memory lane.
We'll be leaving Oak Ridge Park at 10AM, not from the school. The route sheet is Bill Rabley's wonderful map and the park didn't exist then. The Park is one block north on Linville Rd, turn right on Lisa Dr. and into the park. There's bathrooms at the park. Leaving at 10 to let it warm up a little. Feel free to pass this e-mail along though the Saturday ride isn't a "no drop" ride. I'm hoping the pace for this first one is friendlier than they'll become, but whatever. If you send this e-mail to someone who doesn't know the area advise them to bring a map. If my memory serves me the route is 67 mi.
