Hello,

Is there any news on a version for Mac OS X or is this idea dead? The software looks wonderful, but without Mac, I have no way of using it. I'd love to help if I could but I'm not good with Python. I've tried getting something to run for hours and I have just gotten frustrated with no success. Thanks.

Chris

Unfortunately not yet. We'll need a debian developer/maintainer to step up before a mac version can be released.

Sadly when run it exits with the same error as any other time I have tried building it on Mac OS X. Is there a specific version of Python or wx that it requires? It exits with error code 255.

My mistake. I must have done something because I got it to run. For the most part it seems to run fine, just seems to be a little buggy when it comes to scrolling with a trackpad. My guess is something to do with the "rubber band" effect. The final built app is quite large though, 77.9mb. That's with python compiled with the app I think. I'm sure I could build it in Alias for a lot less. I've attached a screenshot just for people who are curious as to what it looks like on Mac OS X.

We told you to fork the project and stop using our resources since you refused to work on Trelby with us. So I have no idea why you're randomly ambushing users on our project's mailing list; get your own mailing list and your own users as we told you to do.

Your GPLing your code is not the issue -- you're free to do as you will with the fork.

* This is the official mailing list -- and while it maybe free as in beer -- is still something we created for use by this project.
* Your fork is not considered official or endorsed -- you do not choose to accept the requirements the Trelby (official) project needs for contribution. We're at a stalemate here.
* Referring to your project as Trelby for mac can (and usually will) confuse a newcomer on this list that this is an official port.

Thus discussing your fork on this list means confusing uses of what Trelby officially is, and causes the impression that we would support it. We do not.

I think you can see what the issue is? Please refrain from bringing up your fork in anyway that would make it Trelby for mac. This list is not a free-for-all, and if we think you're abusing it, we'll remove you from the list.

I'm a pro writer, and no offense to anyone but as the saying goes, "I changed to MAC and I'll never go back".  But I'm not alone.  Would love a PGM for MAC.

Best of luck,  It looks great.

I am curious about the status of the Mac port of Trelby. I can see that there has been some drama about it! :)

My daughter is a young screenwriter, and she used Trelby on Ubuntu to write here first play. I would like to migrate her to a Mac and would like to be able to allow her to continue using Trelby if possible. I have some Python experience, and (and the Computer instructor at a private school) have some students who also might be interested in working on the project.

Can you tell me a little more about what has been done and about what needs to be done? Or could you point me to some more information?

Thank you very much!

Nothing has been done, despite people occasionally popping up and saying they'll work on it. They do that, we spend time telling them how best to approach it, and we never hear from them again.

That is not a good use of my time, so I'm changing tactics. Anyone capable of doing the mac port is also capable of figuring out what needs doing themselves. I'll be glad to give pointers to people once they demonstrate they've done some actual work and seem capable of actually accomplishing something, but I can't keep spending my limited free time tutoring people who have wildly underestimated the amount of work required and give up when they realize it.

I'm sorry if I sound harsh but writing crossplatform GUI programs to high standards is extremely hard, time consuming, unglamorous, thankless work. I'm just giving a realistic picture of what's involved.

I understand your frustration.

I wonder, though, if it might be worthwhile for you to post the "getting started" information somewhere so that people who might be interested can get a sense of what would be required without requiring you to walk each one of them through it. If you have done this in the past, perhaps you have something that could be fairly easily reworked into something that you could post.

Of course, I hear your point that anyone who could actually do the work would likely not require any hand holding to help them to get started. Perhaps you are correct.

Tim,

Although it's not official, I do have Trelby running on Mac OS X. If you are interested, you can shoot me an email for more information.

I'll add it to the FAQ, good idea. That way at least I don't have to keep repeating myself.
