As I said, it will be a GodSend to have someone take on one of the
streams who has ad much interest, drive and experience as Steff.
Starting a thread to dicuss ideas for the 2009 day.
Continuing with my theme of looking at the 12 Days as an "on-Line
convention" I wonder what possibilities we could have for a fan
fiction theme?

I dislike the idea of competitions as rule, they create winners and
losers, but perhaps we can couch it in terms that are less, well,
competative?
Call for submissions of work - A set length? A specific theme?
Publish all submissions as a downloadable text file / on a forum /

Allow a commenting period in a similar manner to the ASC
A judging panel picks the best six for publishing as eBooks based on
their own taste and the popular comments. These are called something
like the "Highly Acclaimed" works of the festival
The judging panel chooses three that they think deserve "further
critique" and these are passed on to a professional writer - the
festival's Author Guest of Honour (GOH). These are called something
like the "Pick of the Festival"
The author gives his impressions of each work as a critique. Although
we specifically do not ask for a "winner" if his praise is more
fulsome of one than the rest, who are we to say he is wrong?
DELIVERABLE:
- Every work is published at the base level: as a downloadable text
file, on a forum or message list. NOTE: Ad Astra could be nominated
the 2009 host for the Fan Fiction stream and as such would be the hub
for entries, questions, comments - does it have the option for Book
Cover thumbnails? Could it field Book pages comparable to the ones we
did last year? I'm sure it can, the entries we did on TU weren't far
off
- The top six are given the full treatment that we gave (or will be
giving) to last years eBooks: pdf, txt, html, eBook.
- The Top three could be published with the GOH author's critique as a
Foreword.
- The combined critique could be published as a Fanzine along with an
interview with the Author GOH on general writing / fan fiction topics;
Excerpts from the top three; Article on the "Highly acclaimed" works;
Article on the festival; booklist of Licensed books published during
2009
- Tip jar in favour of a nominated charity for writers and readers
- Podcast with excerpts read of top six books plus a phone interview
with the Author GOH
POSSIBILITIES
- Podcast streamed via internet radio? Live to air on Public radio?
- If we put together a presentation, could we interest three or six
Trek Alumni in reading one/two of the excerpts? They could contribute
comments to the Podcast as well
- Set minimum standards of spelling / grammar / quality and only
accept those that pass?

All that sounds awesome.... frightening a little, and it sure makes me start to think about a submission.....

Hey, I've got an idea for something that may just be essay length... maybe a thousand words or so, but what I think is a pretty hot idea. Could there be a place for some non-fic within the Trek universe? Kind of a biography channel entry of a character, as a bit of an expoé?

of last year that we should find some way of including all styles and
genres. That's what classifications are all about. As long as its
clearly labeled we can't be held responsible if some idiot opens
something that shocks them. The young and innocent should be protected
online, sure, but the only sure way of doing that is with adult supervision.

I agree. I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but the title should say it all:
"Hellbent: The Captaincy of James Tiberius Kirk"... and look at him from the standpoint of someone from, saythe 24th Century. Like the revisionists might tear the hell out of a hero after he/she is gone and can't defend themselves. I love Kirk, but it just seems like a lot of fun....

All right. I wasn't planning on running any contests. First, for the
eBooks, I plan to approach authors who 1.) Have novel length completed
works. Preference given first to those that require the least amount
of editor-work. The biggest thing that ate my time last year was
editing. I also plan to see if I can get a couple other folks willing
to help me. 2.) After that, I'm going to look into anthologies with
multiple authors, again with preference given to those requiring the
least amount of editorial overview. 3.) Rach, Mike and I are all
hopped up on the idea of producing a fanzine. Mike has pro experience
in the magazine business, Rach and I are both fandom-junkies with
experience in projects like this.
This is very bare-bones, but that's how I'm gonna run this year's.
I'll coordinate all stories, all books and hopefully all cover-art.
Mike wants to discuss hosting and coordination as well, but he'll have
to take the floor to bring that up.
Mind you, this is just the start. I know of one book already I can
have done fairly soon. The rest is a matter of time. Any suggestions
for Fic-Day welcome; bring it!

Insofar as hosting, I do run a pretty fast server. We just moved Ad Astra to it today.
I figure we will also need a site where we can all keep track of our respective projects, so I'm looking into a webapp that'll help us do that. Right now, the leading candidate is TracServer, which comes with a roadmap/timeline feature to give us long-range planning for anything we want, plus tasklists/deadlines.
I'll be happy to take questions. :)

server? There are a lot of people out there doing them and I think we
could get the graphic designers to give them the graphics to to fill
it with. It could then be made available as a free downloadable theme
on the designer's website.
