There is some confusion by the different terminology being expressed - Literature Search, Literature Review

There is a need for definitions.
A literature search is what a librarian will perform for you. They will seek out information for you on the topic and provide brief summaries of the literature and provide a bibliography on the topic.

Barbara, that's a great idea - and I'm not sure people really do know what a literature search is! (versus 'literature review,' for example). . .it's like the perennial need for help with writing better research problem statements.

Hi Ken:

As you described the literature search can be accomplished quite well using the resources of the Transportation Knowledge Network. However, iIt is the literature review aspect that appears to need the attention. When I wrote my Plan A Master's thesis and my dissertations, I worked on the literature review section to explore the literature and identify gaps in the understandings on the topic. My expectation is that academic literature reviews should be complete and well done. However, if you want a good literature review you need to create a good description of the literature review and provide direction. That appears to be the missing piece.

The chapter reviewing the literature is intended to provide the reader with an understanding of previous work on topics related to the current investigations, and a summary of the current state-of-the-art. Writing this chapter requires, at the very least, an outline and the identification of the most important references. Hi:

The 1st task of almost every academic research project (including my dissertations) involved creating a literature review, however little is written about what the specification or requirements of a literature review should be. I think we all feel this is intuitively obvious to the most casual observer, however, unless you have a specification, you cannot define quality. In college faculty give grades of A, B, C, D or F, to describe the quality of a paper. Are any of you aware of a DOT specification or method to specify a literature review?
