A few years back I asked about visiting Mallorca in winter
http://groups.google.com/group/travelspain/browse_frm/month/2007-12
after reading a possibly oudated but very interesting account of the
island (1927).

Well, I've gone even further back this time, to the more famous stay
of Chopin and his mistress in 1838-9. My copy of 'A Winter in
Mallorca' was actually printed in Mallorca and is full of delightful
typographical eccentricities, but George Sand comes over as an
infuriating, supercilious, patronising egocentric, regarding the
Mallorqins as little more than boorish savages, but then come passages
of quite lyrical beauty which indicate that she really did appreciate
the island.

But the picture she paints of winter there is very off-putting, and I
don't think much will have changed there, especially in the north
which would appeal to me most. So a visit in the Spring, before the
hordes arrive, would perhaps be the best plan. I believe that their
stay is still commemorated at the former monastery at Valldemossa.

So where for winter, I wonder?

What did she say about winter in Mallorca that was "off-putting"?

Roger.

Well most of her moans were about accommodation difficulties and the
attitude of the natives, but what I imagine hasn't changed is the
weather - storms of wind and rain which continued for days at a time.
However I was speaking to a friend tonight who had visited Mallorca in
March; perhaps he was unlucky, but he found exactly the same then.

Perhaps I'm getting a little soft in my old((ish) age, but after years
of sometimes arduous winter trips in Spain, I'm looking for a little
winter warmth. Not yet though - it's still amazingly mild and
pleasant here in Scotland as yet.

How about the "other" islands then, the Canaries?
Lanzarote has some wonderful volcanic formations to keep the interest and Tenerife, away from the hordes, is a beautiful island.

Roger.

I know - I was there a couple of years ago! Tenerife and La Gomera,
which I wrote about here.

Gran Canaria and/or one of the smaller islands would be a possibility,
though.

Hi Mac
Lanzarote - it's small be magical - well it was 10 years ago - and if I
was lucky enough to go again I'd go across to Fuentaventura.
