Hi,
On the Costa de la Luz, we've stayed in Zahara de los Atunes, Sanlucar
de Barrameda, driven through Barbate and Conil de la Frontera, passed a
rainy February afternoon in Los Caños de Meca. We have also stayed with
family in El Puerto de Santa Maria, and visited Cadiz from there. Also
very worth a visit are Jerez de la Frontera (actors acting out history
in the Alcazar, a traditional Andalusian city that is not overwhelming,
not to mention sherry), and Vejer de la Frontera (a little more
traditional, an amazing subterranean restaurant on the west? side of the
city).
I didn't see anything in Los Caños de Meca or Conil de la Frontera that
would make me want to go back, except maybe Cabo Trafalgar, if you are
interested in history. Barbate was a larger town; we used it for the
clinic for a grandchild. The forest between Los Caños de Meca and
Barbate was interesting, and good place for a hike and picnic away from
crowds. We looked for, and did not find, a monument to the Peninsular
War in La Barrosa near Chiclana. We also attempted to visit, but missed
the visiting day, of the Spanish Naval Observatory in San Fernando, site
of the Spanish Armada's Prime Meridian (for comparison to the Jesuit's
Prime Meridian thru Salamanca, and that other Prime Meridian somewhere
further north).
To skip "touristy," you might want to try Zahara. We stayed there in
the hotel, and there are lots of opportunities to do very little. But it
was a cute, friendly little town. There is an urbanization called
Atlanterra south of Zahara. It was closed when we were there off-season,
but it's gotta be touristy in season.
For more to do, I would return to Sanlucar. We did stay in a major
hotel. We took the boat up to river into the Donaña, had several
excellent meals in the restaurants on the river. Ask the waiter for a
recommendation. An excellent well-interpreted historical museum on the
waterfront.
For even more to do, there is Cadiz, a major city but not overwhelming.
Since we stayed in El Puerto, we found the ferry service to Cadiz very
handy.
Probably doesn't answer your question directly, but maybe something here
will help.
