I'm travelling with a 12 and a 17 year old in Andalucia for a few days around March 1.  They're Spanish speakers.  I'm into the history but there's a limit to how much time they can spend admiring ancient cathedrals and mosques.  Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Sam

Plenty of things do do for children in most parts of Andalucia, particularly if you are near the coast.

March should give you 'some' sunshine. Beaches are great, even at that time of year, usually. Warm enough perhaps for a boat trip or something?

Places like benalmadena have sea life centres, fuengirola has bowling alleys, water parks.

There is also a world famous zoo in fuengirola. Selwoo is like a safari trip around Estepona area. Benalmadena also has Tivoli world which is a theme park.

Evening entertainement abound with karaoke bars or music type venues. cheap n cheerful along that stretch of the coast. Not as busy that time of the year so good idea to pick up copies of the local free newspapers and magazines aplenty for some local whats on guides.

andalucia.com is a popular website down this way. also surinenglish.com perhaps

hope this helps

Are they into hiking/climbing?  Are amazing walks.  El Torcal near Antequera is fascinating because of the rock formations and fun for both their ages.  And the big cities have more than ancient buildings - there are markets, other places of interest (cave villages near Granada).  And take a river trip in Granada.  Check out too whether any festivals are on - some of the smallest villages have them at odd times.
Have fun.

We enjoyed El Torcal a few years ago. And judging by the range of ages there on that day, so do most teenagers. A bit off the beaten track, though.

Enjoy.

We'll be staying in a villa next to Orgivas, about 45 KM outside Granada in Las Alpujarras the last week of May/first week of June.

Beyond the obivious Alhambra and sites in Granada proper...and the southward jaunts to the sea, any suggestions from the group?

My wife uses a wheelchair, so hill climbing and rustic trails are out, but every little village, odd monument, relic of Islamic architecture, tavern, restaurant is in.

We could also use a suggestion for a quiet, moderately priced hotel in Cordoba for one overnight to allow exploration of Mezquita and beyod.

Would love to hear from the group.

And please, no Torremolinos suggestions!

No Torremolinos, indeed! I thought you said you wanted rustic!

We have stayed at Hotel Maestre in Cordoba a number of times. It's a
seven or eight minute walk to the Mezquita and five minutes from Plaza
del Potro, which has three or four restaurants that set up tables in the
plaza and are quite nice. Maestre has only a couple of floors, with an
elevator, and most of the rooms all look out onto one of two inner
courtyards. If you stay there, insist on one of those rooms (request
when you book); there are a few that overlook a busy and noisy street.

You probably know my tip about the Mezquita (and I hope it's still
working; it was a couple years ago). The Mezquita opens to the public at
10 a.m. and you'll have to pay admission then. But, at 8:30 the door in
the northwest corner of the patio (on the street that borders the
Mezquita on the west) opens to allow in some workers and people who want
to attend the 9 a.m. Mass. You can enter with them (there won't be but a
few) and pretty much have the place to yourself (and others who know
this trick) for an hour. I've spent probably 10 nights in Cordoba and
been at that entrance every morning at 8:30.

What I remember from Pampaneira is a fairly level main plaza
(http://www.schweich.com/imagehtml/TS2038-R1-11sm.html) with a couple of
streets that could be negotiated by wheelchair. Restaurants and
shopping along both streets. The visitor center for the National Park
was in this plaza, but I am remembering 3 or 4 steps up into the visitor
center in 2003. There is some parking in the plaza, but it was full,
and we had to park slightly out of town and walk a short ways (probably
not for a wheelchair).

My memory of Bubion is that it is built along the slope of the road, and
probably difficult for a wheelchair. Pretty much the same for Capileira
except for one terrace that has a couple of shops and restaurants.

Restaurante Alpuxarra at the top of Capileira might be nice, it had a
nice view of Capileira below, it had a level parking lot and I don't
think it had any steps inside
(http://www.schweich.com/imagehtml/DSCN0852sm.html).

Above Capileira, the road was a good dirt road that afforded some nice
views (http://www.schweich.com/imagehtml/DSCN0855sm.html,

HTH,
Tom
