Tickets US-SPAIN this summer

Wow. Ticket prices are outrageous this year.  I really didn't think I was going to have to deal with it, but here I am.

 

Last year we got bumped off our flight in Madrid. They gave us 4 vouchers good for free RT intl flights or $400 off. They put us up over night at the Hotel Auditorium - it was terrible. It was HUGE. The lobby was nice, but the rooms were dingy and badly in need of updating. The pool was tiny. And the food was awful.  But we thought that this year's trip to Spain would be taken care of. The USAir woman that gave us the vouchers said we could use them to come back to spain nex summer (it's the only trip we make) Wrong!

 

We are trying to book for July but now they say that the tickets are only for X class, and that since it's high season, we won't be able to use them because X class won't be available. Great.  Tickets are now $1600+ so the $400 off is a drop in the bucket.

 

Anyone ever run into this? How did you work it out?
