Considered to be one of the finest Spanish art collections in the Americas, THE HISPANIC SOCIETY contains works by Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Goya, El Greco, and Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, among others.
A major component of this museum is the Sorolla Room, which was reinstalled in 2010. It displays a massive series of Sorolla paintings created from 1911 to 1919 (commissioned by Archer Huntington). The paintings line the perimeter of the immense gallery, depicting scenes from each of the provinces of Spain. The painting series, known as Visión de España is comprised of 14 canvases representing the people, landscapes and customs of nine regions of Spain. Realized through staggering effort by the most renowned and popular Spanish artist of his era, who insisted on composing each painting from life sketches made in the open air, the ensemble as a whole measures approximately 230 feet wide and is approximately 11.5 feet high, with figures depicted at full life size. Pretty amazing!
Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida was a Spanish painter, born in Valencia, who excelled in the painting of portraits, landscapes, and monumental works of social and historical themes. His most typical works are characterized by a dexterous representation of the people and landscape under the sunlight of his native land.
