to Travel Myanmar (Tourism information, activities, idea exchange inside Burma)
here, in the delta, we are facing with a big problem.
the government sector and the NGO sector weretrying to deal with the
problem also.
but we are thinking it otherwise.
we are relying on the local, the strength of citizens to help the
fellow citizens.
the following is the draft that we produce.
what i want to know is : r u ready to eat the dried meat? and if so,
how do we sell u the dried field mice to your kitchen so that the
Nargis affected villagers will be a little bit more helped?

----------------------------------------------------------
here we come:

Anti-rodent campaign (from disturbing damage to delicious delicacy)
===================================================
1.What we will do?

We will promote the catching of farm rodent, production and
consumption of the processed or dried rodent through public awareness
raising. We will start from small scale and hope to expend the
consumption and production into business scale processes.

2.Why we will do?

Farming communities from our 30 villages from 5 village clusters
reported the damages and disturbance caused by the rodent. As the
villages are trying for the livelihood and for rebuilding their live
and their livelihood, and as they can’t reach the usual yield of rice
yet, still the rodent damage their fragile effort, this asks for
external help. If we could eliminate the problem, not only that they
could carry on their livelihood, but also that the food security of
the area will be secured and also, no more excessive food distribution
would be requested next year, thus could reduce dependency and
potential food risks.

3.When we will do?

As we already have 3 invoice from Labutta, Myaung Mya and Yangon
weighting 40 units (1 KG= 0.635 unit). The villagers reported that it
would take at least 10 days to catch and process the rodent in to
dried meat; we have to consider this processing time plus delivery
time. As we are planning a small scale process, we can start as soon
as they delivered and we have the required amount of stock in our
hand.

4.Where we will do?

Production
We will start at the 30 villages where our fellows, the community
development workers reside.

Consumption
We will market the product (dried rice meat and/or processed meat) at
Labutta area starting from beer pubs followed by small liquor shop,
restaurants and local markets and shops.

Marketing or awareness raising
We will do public awareness raising and promotion of the consumption
of the product at Labutta through public advertising activity.
We will extend the marketing to Yangon and Myaung Mya through our
contact and export the product.

5.Who will benefit?

Directly, the SHGs will benefit from the sale and their cohesion will
be raised through collective activity within their group and Tran-
groups.
Directly, the farming communities will be benefited from reduced
rodent disturbance.
Indirectly, we hope that the individuals will also join for cash
incentive in the production at village level.
We hope to have business sector involvement in the production and
distribution process because of the financial incentive after our
marketing.

6.With whom we will do?

Production
Through the fellows, we will promote the catching and processing of
farm mouse by the youth SHGs who, we see, are energetic (and
concerned, that we hope)

Distribution
We will start with the local beer pub. Thus, we will work with local
business sector. We will coordinate with Agencies presence in the town
along with government sector (as far as we know, both parties are
trying to deal with the problem through initiatives and coordination)

7. How we will do?
Awareness raising and promoting of the consumption will be done at
Labutta level FIRST.
Production will be done by the SHGs or CBOs or SRGs ( whatever the
term is)
Distribution will be done by volunteering staffs from agencies in
Labutta.
Marketing of the processed good will be done at Labutta level FIRST
also.

8. What we will need?

Coordination
We will need coordination and assistances ( technical, advice,
physical and contribution) from Local and International agencies along
with local government and institutions ( so that the problem will be
dealt; we can’t work alone on this matter: everyone’s concern and
assistant will be helpful)

Subsidy
Assistant for marketing and distribution (commercializing) will be
needed.

this is to report to the group about the status of the movement.

untill now, we could imported 270 Viss of dried rodent meat and
market in YGN.
a Viss of dried meat equals to 70 farm rodent.
a rodent can destroy 10 Bucket ( Tin) of peddy.
we had a press conference.

this is the update.

there are a lot of rodent , still, in the delta. we have to help the
villagers produce and market the meat , so that we can ensure next
year or coming years food securicy.

and we are also concern bout the Arreweddy.
we heard that they building as Dam in the Myit Sone of the river.3
more dams will be built in MayKa and 3 more in Malika.

WHO own the Arrewaddy? nobody owns or , we could say everyone. Who
would want to visit a concrete structure ( DAm) compared with a
starting point of the longest river of the land?
what will be the consequences of the daming in the upland of the
country? ( not one but seven)
what will happen to the livlihood of the millions of citizens whose
livlihood depends on the land?
what will happen to our Arrewaddy Dolphin?
who will ensure the safety of the people and tourist sites downland
from the dam from flooding and accidents?
how many endangered specieces that live downland of the daming sits
and who ensure the safety of their home?

who measure the consequences and effects that can be came to our Pagan
and Mandalay?
how our delta will be affected?

this is our questions and concerns. somebody pls answer.
for my point of view, i don't want to say NO to the daming . but i
just want the builder to revalue the economic, cultural, potential and
the heritage of the river and the live of people living along or
directly or indirectly depending on the river.

i want the builder to earn more money not by daming but by other means
as enhanced tourism activities and other big scale investment by the
river.

best regards,

thomas
