A dual-mode vehicle (DMV) has begun service on JR’s Kushiro line in Hokkaido. The vehicle, which is able to travel on both roads and railroad tracks, is ideal for rural areas such as northern Hokkaido, where it may be too expensive for rail companies to use conventional trains. As shown by the above news report, the passengers enjoyed their ride on the DMV, taking pictures and video along the way. Even the Japanese-speaking white guy was impressed, telling the camera that the change between road and rail was very fast and smooth.

There is some additional detail (as of 2005) on this project at:

US Railroad maintance crews have had vehicles like this for at least 20 years. And they go faster than 45mph on surface roads.

Sure, and it could be lighter and smaller than the converted pick up trucks the RR's use.

But isn't the issue ability to run enough of these densely packed at high speed on a rail line, and get them on/off consistently fast? All this to be competitive with a freeway lane for both capacity and land use.
