Dear advocates for a "pure" Michigan and a cooler world, 

 If you signed up to volunteer as a petition circulator for the ballot initiative put forth by the Committee to Ban Fracking, either through me or another member of the committee statewide, it is time to get your information on the website so we can communicate with you.  We are asking all volunteers to enter their information by going to the website, letsbanfracking.org and then clicking on the volunteer button. When you finish the quick sign up, you will be sent two emails. One of them should tell you how to contact the coordinator in your region, and you are asked to then email that person, who will get petitions to you, train you, and alert you to events in your area conducive to signature gathering. The second email tells you how to "activate" your account.

    If you have not signed up to help with this effort but think you might like to, feel free to contact me with your questions or concerns, or just go to the website for many of the answers. This is a citizen ballot initiative to amend a current state law so that it results in a ban on fracking, and equally important, a ban on disposing of fracking waste anywhere in the state, no matter what its origin is. The current law, dating from 1939, says, in part:

       

     The People of the State of Michigan enact:

MCL 324.61502 Construction of part

".............The interests of the people demand that exploitation and waste of oil and gas be prevented so that the history of the loss of timber may not be repeated. It is accordingly the declared policy of the state to protect the interests of its citizens and landowners from unwarranted waste of gas and oil and to foster the development of the industry along the most favorable conditions and with a view to the ultimate recovery of the maximum production of these natural products."

( When it refers to the loss of timber, it is the loss of hardwoods that were cut and left on the ground when white pine was the only thing of interest. In other words, they should have used more of the wood they cut, and therefore want to make sure they use all the oil and gas possible now- no waste of resources allowed by simply leaving it in the ground)

I'm sure you can see that the industry has loved this state law all these years, as it makes the DEQ do their bidding no matter what the consequences on the environment.

Hope many of you will join us when the campaign launches on April 12 to get this initiative on the ballot so the citizens can decide if they want the state raped to maximize oil and gas industry profits. Sign up now to volunteer, so we are ready when the window opens.
