Subject: [NJfood] FW: [NJGMO] March Against Monsanto

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 25 'March Against Monsanto' to be held at in New Brunswick, NJ

NEW BRUNSWICK  May 10, 2013 - March Against MonsantoNew Brunswick announced today that on May 25,  people from all over NJ will join the "March Against Monsanto" in New Brunswick NJ.  The march is one of hundreds being organized across the world, shining a spotlight on the company who is perpetuating genetically engineered foods across the globe. The march will start at 2:00 pm at George Street Co-op, 89 Morris Street, New Brunswick, NJ and will feature speakers including Jim Walsh of Food & Water Watch, Lucia Huebner from Beechtree Farm in Hopewell, John Leary General Manager and Board President of George Street Co-op, Jim Wilday from GMO Free NJ, and Elizabeth Pyshnik, permaculture advocate and student in environmental engineering.

Theresa Lam, an organizer of the event, says she was inspired to lead the march in order to bring awareness of the issues surrounding genetically engineered (GE) foods.  Many people do not realize that GE foods are harmful to our health, environment and farmers. We want labeling on foods that contain GE organisms. We call for the NJ legislature to let us decide if we want to buy foods with genetically engineered ingredients by passing legislation to require labels on foods the contain genetically engineered materials. The full March Against Monsanto mission statement can be read here.

Lucia Hubner, NJ farm owner at Beechtree Farm in Hopewell states  "Ask yourself this...is it okay for the mega-corporation to patent and control most agricultural seeds today which are totally dependent on their own pesticides and chemicals (Roundup), and who promotes a form of agriculture that has driven most family farmers out of business? If you answer no, then join the March Against Monsanto. The March is happening all over the world. I'll be in attending the March in New Brunswick and hope to see you there."

Camille Miller, Executive Director of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey (NOFA-NJ) stated that "Organic farmers' livelihoods are at risk since organic crops can become contaminated from GE pollen. In such cases, their crops can no longer be certified as organic."

"People around the world are standing up to Monsanto, demanding a food system that is better for farmers, the environment, and  their family's health.  Many see Monsanto at the heart of the problems with our food system, literally changing the face of our food through genetic engineering," said Jim Walsh, NJ Director of Food & Water Watch.  This march is happening at a time when consumers are demanding the basic right to know if the food they are eating is genetically engineered, and companies like Monsanto are standing in the way," added Walsh.
