Transgenders welcomes govt order

Chennai, April 28: Tamil Nadu Aids Initiative-Voluntary Health
Services (TAI-VHS), an organisation working with transgendered
people, today welcomed the government order assuring them of their
basic rights.
"We are glad that the government order addresses various practical
issues that the Aravani (transgendered) community faces such as
basic health, education and legal rights, space for creative
expression," a press release quoting R Lakshmibai, Project Director,
TAI-VHS said here today.
A order passed recently in response to the community''s plea assured
Aravanis of basic rights such as right to education, livelihood,
ration card, voting identity card and healthcare services.
The community will be celebrating ''Aravanis Koovagam Festival''
next week in Villupuram.
More than 50,000 transgendered from across the country come together
to celebrate their unique identity. (Our Correspondent)
