Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) President Neil G.
Giuliano Friday applauded Univision Radio for taking quick, decisive
action against The Luis Jiménez Show for its host's defamatory
on-air use of anti-gay slurs on May 1.
Univision Radio announced Friday that the show has been suspended
for one month.
“GLAAD applauds Univision Radio for doing the right thing and taking
responsible action against Jiménez’s vulgar and bigoted comments,"
Giuliano said. “We call on all Spanish-language broadcasters to
require the same accountability from all their on-air talent.”
On his May 1 radio program, Jiménez and his co-hosts performed "Las
Patas" (The Dykes), a song in which they used homophobic slurs and
ridiculed lesbians. Later during that same program, the show
introduced an offensive stereotypical gay character called "Chef
Pepín." Jiménez then ridiculed and verbally abused Chef Pepín for
being gay, saying, "Cállate pato" (Shut up, faggot).
When RBD star Christian Chávez came out in early March, Jiménez
mocked the singer’s sexual orientation, saying, "Había salido del
closet porque encontró que alguien se lo diera por el follín" (He
had come out because he had found someone to give it to him from
behind).
Jiménez established a pattern of defamatory slurs directed at
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people during his 13 years as
the host of El Vacilón de la Mañana at WSKQ-FM Mega 97.9, the New
York affiliate of Spanish Broadcasting Corporation (SBC). At SBC,
Jiménez and his co-host, "Moon," were widely known for routinely
making homophobic and transphobic comments.
Some of the songs they performed mocked people who had been sexually
abused and claimed the abuse caused them to be gay.
GLAAD contacted Univision Radio in January 2007 to express its
serious concerns after the network announced its hiring of Jiménez,
and since then has been in regular communication with its network
president, Gary Stone. GLAAD contacted Stone on May 1 to report
Jiménez’s anti-gay and lesbian comments, and a meeting has been
scheduled with GLAAD, Univision Radio and Jiménez's production team
for May 17 in New York.
