Stories around the crash in N. Portland involving Krick are particularly likely to get some vituperative comments. Any chance WAAT and AROW could infuse some sanity into the comments? Anyone have time and inclination to write a letter to the editor about Burke's death? Rob Anderson is CC'ed on this, as he uses Barbur as part of is daily commute and just called about how this tragedy has touched him.
I will work on getting comments out that mentions the following:
- It is a senseless death when someone is killed simply trying to cross the street - Everyone should feel safe walking and biking in our region - Thanks to the Portland Police for their response and arrest of Caleb Pruitt - WPC mourns the loss of Angela Burke and cannot imagine the loss felt by her family and friends across the country
Let me know if there is any more information you need, if you can help, or what WPC can do to help us all respond. I just cannot handle another death to get mentioned in the news and then filed away.

Hi All,
Here's the update from Sgt. Pete Simpson, and update from Oregonian. * N. Portland * Zachary Krick stepped on N. Ida against light Car had a green light, struck Zachary Krick is in serious condition but no life-threatening injuries http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/12/portland_police_...

The word accident is used twice in the short Oregon live article about Angela Burke, and it's also one of the few tags they applied to the story. It almost feels petty getting peeved off at word-choice when we're talking about a tragic loss of life, but this wasn't an accident! The person driving was duii, and may be charged with a felony because he is deemed to be responsible for his actions. But I wonder if this a fight worth fighting, or if it's more likely to derail the conversation.

I think it's an issue worth fighting for. The Oregonian needs to come up with sound editorial policy on crash reporting. While some Oregonian journalists have come to the table and understand the implication of reporting these crashes as "accidents", it's apparent many writers are feeling out their own approach. I am working on a letter to the editor now.
Personally, I don't think this should be written off as just the workings of a bad apple driver. *This road is fundamentally dangerous*.
Thanks, Steph & Roger for bringing this to our attention.

Perhaps I spoke too soon. Thankfully, it looks like others already have impacted the reporting here. The online article has been edited, now referring to this as a crash, not an accident.

The article I was referencing was about Zack, not Angela-- but proof of the concept that The Oregonian is woefully inconsistent with their crash reporting.

Thanks for bringing the word "accident" up. I got fired up and determined to write something about it. Then remembered that I already did, three years ago:
All news sources have a style guide. I don't know about the police but it might be worthwhile to try to get the word accident stricken from them. The construction industry has vanquished the word from their vocabulary. Why not transportation?

I have no idea if it'd help, but I'd certainly be willing to sign some sort of letter urging a style guide change at the O arguing for more attention to the accuracy of "accident." I could also make some calls to figure out who send it to at the O, Tribune, Columbian, etc., if such a thing hasn't been tried yet and anyone's interested in doing so.
It seems to me like a clear case of reporters and editors (including me, a year ago) just not thinking twice.
Cold comfort. But I think it's a pretty easy win.
