Volunteer opportunities

1. IT skills

Bike to the Future is looking for volunteers with information technology skills. In particular, we need someone to maintain the software of our Membership Database System, which uses Ruby on Rails.

2. City of Winnipeg Parks Plan

BttF has been invited to sent a rep to an all-day "facilitated stakeholder input session" seminar on Saturday October 24th at the Convention Centre. We have a complete set of information about the day.

3. Human Rights conference for high school students

BttF Director Jeremy Hull will be representing us at a Human Rights conference for high school students. Jeremy would like to do this as a team with another, preferably younger, member of BttF.

The conference targets students in grades 11 & 12, and will take place on December 10th, UN Human Rights Day, at the University of Winnipeg. The theme this year will center on sustainable development, with a focus on various issues that affect young people directly, including water, agriculture, and transportation. They want students to come away knowing why and how they can have a positive impact.

They have asked us to make a breakout group presentation about Bike to the Future, once in the morning and again in the afternoon.

4. Manitoba Medical Association (MMA) bicycling display

Last year the MMA and BttF partnered to produce a very professional and very large information display about the health benefits of bicycling. The display would be more effective and would get used more often if we had a portfolio of hand-out leaflets to go with it. BttF has a number of leaflets, but we need a volunteer to compile a list of those leaflets and work with the MMA to determine which leaflets should go with the display, and to ensure the MMA has a stock of those leaflets.

5. Power Shift Canada

The Canadian Youth Climate Coalition has invited Bike to the Future to be a part of Power Shift Canada, and they've provided us with background info and ideas of how we can be involved. We need a BttF member to take on this initiative under the guidance of our Board of Directors.

6. Writing grant applications

There are a number of grants that Bike to the Future could apply for if we had a staff person (which would be paid for by one of the successful grant applications) or a volunteer to write the grant applications. We have written successful grant applications in the past, so we do have grant-writing templates.

Two of the many available grants are from the Youth Eco Internship Program (http://www.yeip.ca) and the Bicycle Trade Association of Canada (http://btac.org).

If you are interesting in any of these volunteer opportunities, or would like more information about any of them, please contact us at con...@biketothefuture.org .

Ciclovia success!

Winnipeg's inaugural Ciclovia on Sunday September 13th was a major success! There were an estimated 5000 attendees, and almost all organizers and stakeholders want to expand it for 2010.

BttF's Membership Committee Director, Rob Cosco, and two of his committee volunteers (BttF Directors At Large Liz Erickson and Holly Poklitar) were selling BttF memberships at Ciclovia. There are now 119 new BttF members!

18 prizes donated by Olympia Cycle & Ski (St Mary's Road), Sampson's Sportland, Lifesport (Pembina Hwy), Portage Cycle, and Bikes & Beyond were drawn and later distributed to 18 of the 119 new members.
