Greetings Trail Monsters,

Just a note to say it has been delightful to discover you, meet you,
and get in several great runs-- and now I am headed west again, very
far west, to Orcas Island, WA, where I have been offered the career-
salvaging job of part-time librarian at the Orcas Island Public
Library. Cain't believe it, but giving up on things produces
results. Don't know how I'll pay for the other half of my existence,
but there's a thriving summer economy there, and I can always sell
drugs to minors. Organic, of course. Just kidding! Stay in school!
Orcas is a lovely island, a 45-minute ferry ride from Anacortes, WA,
90 minutes north of Seattle. It is home to the very charming Orcas
Island FatAss 50K, on FEBRUARY 6, 2010:

All Trail Monsters are welcome to decamp on my humble floor if you
head out this way. I should have the trash cleared out of my rental
cabin by then (I'm told it has great potential). Runners be warned:
there is no flat on this large island, and the 50k gains/loses 7000ft
up Mt. Constitution. However, there are no roots. Ha! Feel free to
come any other time as well; it's very pretty, and the kayaking is
almost as good as in Stonington.

See you all Sunday in "hell",
Susannah

That's really excellent Susannah. Stunningly gorgeous area that I've
seen too little of. I was at a conference in Seattle in the late 90s
though and skipped out of town one day, rented a car, drove to
Anacortes, took the ferry to Friday Harbor, and kayaked with the
Orcas, who were all gathered together to feast on migrating salmon.
One of my all time favorite experiences. I also have a good friend
that is the director of the Friday Harbor laboratories and there is
always the potential that I could teach a summer class there - so I
might take you up on that offer!

Cheers,

Jeff
