I've attached a file that combines 4 recent runs on a google map to show connections between existing systems. This map DOES NOT include the River Trail system by the Presumpscot Falls, only because I haven't run that recently. I'm guessing conservatively that there is about 25 miles of trail mapped here. Note the North side of the upper Presumpscot trail has some significant poison ivy that is now emerging and this section gets really overgrown in the summer so its best run in the spring (up to about right now) and then in the late fall. The blackstrap trails could be connected in with a 1 mile run from the 302 trail junction up 302 to Duck Pond Rd. That adds another buttload of mileage.

The temporary file is online here but this will disappear in a few days so I've attached an HTML file that can be opened in any web browser: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/display/1336319922-26716-72.224.172.148.html

Jackson XC has a "race" in the winter to see who can ski the most miles of trail in one day - they have about 100 miles of trail and there is no obvious route through the system (the system is a hub and spoke system rather than a pineland loop system). Redundant mileage doesn't count so the goal is not only to go long and fast, but also use an efficient route that doesnt' use the same connections. We should do the same thing on the LowellPreserve/Blackstrap/Hadlock/Community Park/River system. You'd have to GPS your run and then subtract off any trails done more than once.

You could also connect Hadlock to Blackstrap Preserve by going up Rt 100 to Hurricane Rd. You could then connect Blackstrap to the river by going down 302 and have one huge loop with probably not more than 2 miles of road.

I suppose if I can survive the pemi loop then I could do that!

From a quick look at the maps it looks like a lot of road running. Is that correct?

Not counting the Leighton Road segment (which isn't necessary - just did this for a quick back to the parking lot). There is a total of 3.2 mi of road on that map. Here are the road segments:

"official" road connection on East Branch Trail (Falmouth Rd) is 0.2 mi (actually this isn't on the map)
alternative 1 (Terra Way): 0.54 mi
alternative 2 (Mcrann field): <0.05 mi

road connection between East Branch Trail and Community Park via Huston Park (Falmouth Rd): 0.6 mi

road connection between East Branch Trail and Community Park via Twin Pond Road: 0.7 mi

road connection between Corsetti's trailhead of North Side Presumpscot R. trail and Riverton Trolly Park  trails: 0.3 mi

road section of River Trail along Riverside Rd (much of this is grass shoulder and dirt road): 0.68 mi

Blackstrap Rd trailhead of South Side Presumpscot River Trail and RR: 0.22 mi

Some other connections not on map:

road connection between Falmouth High School trailhead of East Branch Trail and Field Road trailhead of community park trail (not on map): 1.03 mi

Gray Road-Trolly Farm Way connector between Hadlock and Blackstrap (Ian's suggestion): 1.2 mi

Corsetti's trailhead to Duckpond trailhead (Hardy Rd. system): 1 mi

Ian's loop would be a minimum of 15.6 miles (very rough estimate using gmap pedometer). Here is a temp link to that loop overlayed on the other map: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/display/1336331374-04125-72.224.172.148.html. And the html file:

Ian's loop would have about 1 + 1.2 + 0.7 = 2.6 miles of road. Another 10-15 miles of trail could be added with no additional road. To avoid the poison ivy would require an additional 1 road mile (using the south side river trails).

Another adventure long run would be point-to-point starting at Lowell Preserve in Windham and ending at Back Cove.
