Luo Han Guo extract (Momordica Grosvenori P.E.) is mainly composed of
triterpenoid mogrosides, amino acids and vitamin, etc.
Triterpenoid glycosides
The glycosides in Luo Han Guo mainly as triterpene glycosides,part of
compounds of cucurbitane type, the collecting of saponins. It includes
Mogrosides II, III, IV, V, VI, siamcroside I, 11-oxo-Mogroside and
neomogroside, etc. Triterpenoid glycoside V in Luo Han Guo is the major
composition for sweetener.

Assay data from The Center For Agri-food Quality & Safety,The ministry
of Agriculture,PRC
Vitamin Plentiful vitamin C with content 339.68-487.52mg/100g exists
in the fruit of Luo Han Guo in mature, along with 24 kinds of inorganic
elements as well, among which 16 kinds act as necessary trace elements
for human body. In addition, there are 27-33% of fat in the kernel
of Luo Han Guo. The necessary fat acids for human body add up to
linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmic acid, covering 7.7% of its kind.
D-mannitol also exists in fresh fruit.

Luo Han Guo and its extracts had anti-diabetic preventive activity. The
efficacy of Siraitia Grosvenori powder (SGP) and its extracts (SGE) on
blood glucose in normal and diabetic mice have been studied. The result
is bellowed:

Table 5 showed that the fasting blood glucose of the high dosage SGP
group, that of the mid-dosage SGE group and that of low-dosage SGE
group were all lower than the control group. low-dosage SGE have the
best effect on decreasing blood glucose. The result indicate that SGP
at dosage of 3 g/kg.bw and SGE at the dosage of 0.5~1.0 g/kg.bw are all
have the effect on decreasing blood glucose.

Table 6 showed that comparing the control group, the blood glucose of
mice i.g. high dosage SGP after 0.5h is lower. the blood glucose of
mice i.g. low dosage SGE after 0h and 0.5h is lower as well.
The above text indicated Siraitia Grosvenori powder(SGP) and its
extracts(SGE) have the effect on decreasing blood glucose distinctly.
Comparing to the contract group (High blood glucose mice) its active in
preventing blood glucose lelve is outstanding. It showed that Siraitia
grosvenori and its extracts can weaken the damage of pancreatic B cell
induced by alloxan and improve the function of damaged cell. It is
benefit to relive the Diabetic symptom. The low dosage (0.5 g/kg.bw
)SGE (containing 80% mogrosides) was prior to high dosage SGP(3.0
g/kg.bw).It is probably proved that triterpene component mogrosides may
be the active ingredients.
It is reported that the decreasing blood glucose function of mogrosides
is possible relative to its own anti-oxidant. Antioxidant can decrease
the free radical, thus is good for control the diabetic. Furthermore,
it have antimicrobial and immune nodulation functions, which can
prevent the diabetic complication, the further research on it is keen
on.
Mogrosides is a natural product, which is of high saccharinity, low
calorie, innocuous and safety. The result of the test showed that
mogrosides have effect on normal mice, which is different from anther
decreasing blood g products. Therefore, using mogrosides as sweetening
reagent for healthy drink or decreasing blood glucose glucose drugs are
all promising.
