American fast fashion label, Forever 21, to open its first UK store
this November.
A look from the Forever 21 autumn/winter 2010 collection
Forever 21, America's answer to Primark and New Look, will be opening
its first store in the UK this Autumn. The brand makes inexpensive
clothing and accessories that ape up-to-the-minute trends, with new
styles arriving daily in their shops. Two stores on this side of the
Atlantic will launch; one in Birmingham on the 12th November and
another in Dublin on the 13th.
In New York, Forever 21's cavernous flagship store on Times Square
sees more visitors per day than the Statue of Liberty - 100,000 people
versus 14,000. The location has been described by New York Magazine as
"the scariest store to have opened on the island of Manhattan since
the epic Hollister [a part of Abercrombie and Fitch] descended."
The company has made headlines for being sued by designers citing
copyright infringement. There have been 50 or so suits over the last
four years brought by designers including Anna Sui and Diane von
Furstenberg.
The label is not without its fans, though, celebrities seen wearing
Forever 21 include Kirsten Stewart, Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton,
Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift.
"I can see how the brand appeals to younger people. It's fast,
affordable, fun - what's not to love about that?" says Amina Akhtar, a
fashion brand consultant in New York. "If I had a teenager, I bet you
a million dollars she'd live at Forever 21, and rightfully so. Part of
the appeal is the loud blasting music and the overwhelming displays."
Forever 21 was founded in Los Angeles in 1984, and now has 460 stores
in the US, Canada, Korea and Japan.
"New drops in store daily ensure a fresh injection of fashion at every
visit," says a spokesperson. The range will also be available to UK
shoppers online for the first time. Larry Meyer, Forever 21 Executive
Vice President, added: "We are sure that style-conscious shoppers are
going to love our fashions and our prices."
Annabel Tollman, a New York based celebrity stylist, says that the
high-street market in the UK is already flush with successful brands
such as ASOS, Topshop, Primark and Zara.
"But it's always a novelty when something we haven't had on our shores
before opens. When Topshop wasn't available in America, it was
massively exciting when the first one opened."
In addition to Forever 21 apparel and accessories, the Ireland store
will sell 21MEN, a line of fast fashion for men; Forever 21+, a
plus-size line; a children's line and Twelve by Twelve, a
"couture-like aspiration" line.
