Outgoing US President Bush has warned his successor Barack Obama of another
terrorist attack on the United States ahead of his inauguration.
Within eight days in office, Bush said in his last news conference that the
most urgent security challenge Obama will face is preventing another attack
like those of Sept. 11, 2001.
"There's still an enemy out there that would like to inflict damage on
America -- Americans. And that'll be the major threat," Bush said on Monday.
"But I wish him all the best ... The stakes are high," he added.
Only eight months into his presidency, Bush faced the 9/11 attacks on the
US.
The outgoing president also defended his record when asked if the harsh
treatment of terrorism suspects along with going to war in Iraq without a UN
approval had hurt the US image abroad.
"I strongly disagree with the assessment that our moral standing has been
damaged," Reuters quoted Bush as saying.
However, he admitted having regrets that weapons of mass destruction - the
main justification for the US-led 2003 invasion of Iraq - had not been found
in the country.

difference between Israel and U.S. eastern is -7 hours. If Olmert called at
3:30 that would have been 8:30pm in Washington DC, not during any official

So Olmert is exaggerating his influence here - he did not get Bush to
interrupt a speech, but he did get him to change a UN vote..
But the essence is clear. Israel called and the U.S. president did as he was
told to do.

The figures for Israel's killing sprees are too awful to contemplate. In
Lebanon 2006, 1,200 dead and 4,400 wounded; in Gaza, as I write, over 900
killed including 370 women and children, and 4,100 maimed and wounded. And
let us not forget that in-between times since the start of the second
intifada in 2000, Israel has killed another 4,800 Palestinians including 950
children.
Nearly 7,000 lives brutally taken. That's a disgraceful amount of blood for

Israel is believed to be using controversial white phosphorus shells to
screen its assault on the heavily populated Gaza Strip yesterday. The
weapon, used by British and US forces in Iraq, can cause horrific burns but
is not illegal if used as a smokescreen.
The smokescreen clause is exactly that - an implausible legal smokescreen.
The Geneva Treaty of 1980 stipulates that white phosphorus should not be
used as a weapon of war in civilian areas, but there is no blanket ban under
international law on its use as a smokescreen or for illumination. However,
Charles Heyman, a military expert and former major in the British Army,
said: "If white phosphorus was deliberately fired at a crowd of people
someone would end up in The Hague. White phosphorus is also a terror weapon.
The descending blobs of phosphorus will burn when in contact with skin."

middle of the day.
The Israeli military last night denied using phosphorus, but refused to say
what had been deployed. "Israel uses munitions that are allowed for under
international law," said Captain Ishai David, spokesman for the Israel
Defence Forces. "We are pressing ahead with the second stage of
operations..."

Because that's what it's looked like watching it on TV these last two days.
At first I thought they were the cluster bombs of the type they used on the
Lebanon when they invaded that neighbour a couple of years ago. But there
was not really much by way of explosion, they seemed to be some incendiary -
but not as a flare or marker because that could be achieved better in other
ways. I never really imagined it could be phosphorus - that they would be
stupid enough to use that. And these warheads were exploding into
residential areas in Gaza.
On TV you can see the Jewish death squads using US military hardware to
exterminate the democratic government of Gaza taking with them as many
civilian casualties as they please. You can actually watch these war crimes
as they are committed live on television. And we can see - in real-time in
one frame - the Israeli ambassador excusing it or an American official
encouraging it all while on the other frame - also in real-time - we can see
the Israelis raining chemical weapons down on a refugee camp.
Phosphorus weapons cause chemical burns and the Red Cross and human rights
groups say they should be treated as chemical weapons.
The Geneva Conventions ban the use of white phosphorus as an incendiary
weapon against civilian populations and in air attacks against military
forces in civilian areas. -

Israel says all weapons legal amid phosphorus claims
The Israeli army has insisted that all weapons being used in its Gaza
campaign were within the bounds of international law, amid accusations it
was using controversial white phosphorus shells.
Asked whether the military was using white phosphorus, an army spokesman
refused to confirm or deny the claim and insisted that everything being used
was within the bounds of international law.
"All weapons used by the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) are in accordance with
international law," he said.
"We are only using what is being used by other Western armies - we are not
using anything out of the ordinary," he said.
Mark Regev, spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said that
Israel was only using legal weapons of the type used by other Western
armies.
"Israel military forces only use munitions that are acceptable under
international law and international convention," he said.
"The type of munitions used by Israel are similar, if not identical, to
munitions used by other western democracies, including NATO members."
His comments came a day after Dr Yusef Abu Rish, a doctor at Gaza City's
Nasser hospital, said he had treated at least 55 people suffering burns
caused by controversial white phosphorus shells.
Under international law, white phosphorus is banned for use against
civilians, but is permitted if used for creating a smokescreen.
