Importance: High

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed, and
thus clamorous to be led to safety, by menacing it with an endless series of
hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."  [or staged] - Henry L. Mencken
(1880-1956)

Liberty can not be preserved without general knowledge among people."
(August 1765) John Adams

"I've never seen a President - I don't care who he is - stand up to the
Jews. They always get what they want. If the American people understood what
a grip these people have got on our government, they would rise up in arms."
- Admiral Thomas Moorer, Chairman, U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, 1970-74

Private firms with outright police powers have been proliferating in some
places - and trying to expand their terrain. The trend is triggering debate
over whether the privatization of public safety is wise.

America's Red Ink

The largest employer in the world announced on Dec. 15 that it lost about
$450 billion in fiscal 2006. Its auditor found that its financial statements
were unreliable and that its controls were inadequate for the 10th straight
year. On top of that, the entity's total liabilities and unfunded
commitments rose to about $50 trillion, up from $20 trillion in just six
years.

If this announcement related to a private company, the news would have been
on the front page of major newspapers. Unfortunately, such was not the case
-- even though the entity is the U.S. government.

To put the figures in perspective, $50 trillion is $440,000 per American
household and is more than nine times as much as the median household
income.

The only way elected officials will be able to make the tough choices
necessary to put our nation on a more prudent and sustainable long-term
fiscal path is if opinion leaders state the facts and speak the truth to the
American people.

The Government Accountability Office is working with the Concord Coalition,
the Brookings Institution, the Heritage Foundation and others to help
educate the public about the facts in a professional, nonpartisan way. We
hope the media and other opinion leaders do their part to save the future
for our children and grandchildren.

10,000 people a month will go insolvent as debt soars in the U.K.

*       Another record level is expected

*       Experts fear fraud is on rise

More than 10,000 people a month are expected to declare themselves insolvent
this year as a culture of unsustainable debt grows among the "buy now, pay
never" generation.

Acountancy experts are forecasting a record number of personal insolvencies
in the first three months, after a year in which bankruptcies and similar
arrangements soared above the 100,000 mark for the first time.

Financial advisers say that the figures point to the emergence of a
generation who take debt for granted and for whom bankruptcy has lost its
stigma.

The use of individual voluntary agreements (IVAs), a popular alternative to
bankruptcy that protects      debtors' homes from automatic repossession,
has grown steadily over the past two years and is expected to soar this
year.
