JERUSALEM - Rabbis in the Israeli army told battlefield troops in
January's Gaza offensive that they were fighting a "religious war"
against gentiles, it has been revealed.
An army commander wrote of the shocking command in an Israeli
newspaper today - one day after it emerged that Israeli soldiers
were told they could kill innocent civilians during the war.
"Their message was very clear: we are the Jewish people, we
came to this land by a miracle, God brought us back to this land
and now we need to fight to expel the gentiles who are interfering
with our conquest of this holy land," the commander said.
The account by Ram, a pseudonym to shield the soldier's identity,
was published by the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper in the
second day of revelations that have rocked the Israeli military.
They were leaked from a February 13 meeting of armed forces
members to share their Gaza experiences.
Some veterans, alumni of an Israel Defense Force (IDF) military
academy, told of the killing of civilians and their impression that
deep contempt for Palestinians pervaded the ranks of the Israeli
forces.
The institution's director, Danny Zamir, confirmed that Thursday's
published accounts were authentic.
'Tons of Psalms'
In longer excerpts in its Friday 'Week's End' edition, the daily
quoted "Ram" as saying his impression of the 22-day operation
was "the feeling of an almost religious mission."
It began when a devout sergeant in his unit "assembled the
whole platoon and led the prayer for those going into battle,"
he said.
"Also when we were inside they sent in those booklets full of
Psalms, a ton of Psalms. I think the house I was in for a week,
we could have filled a room with the Psalms they sent."
The officer felt there was a "huge gap between what the
Education Corps sent out and what the IDF rabbinate sent out."
The corps distributed pamphlets about the history of Israel's
fighting in Gaza from 1948 to the present, he said.
But the rabbinate's message imparted to many soldiers the sense
that "this operation was a religious war".
A squad commander from Ram's Givat Brigade, named as Aviv,
recounted his misgivings about orders to break down doors with
armored vehicles and shoot anyone inside, floor by floor.
In the event, the order was amended to include "operating
megaphones" so advancing troops could tell people they had
five minutes to get out or be killed.

KILLING GENTILES IS FUN - Using US-supplied weaponry, the "most
moral army in the world" blasts away at the civilian population of Gaza.
Aviv said "there was a very annoying moment" when he briefed
his men and one challenged that order, saying: 'Yeah? Anyone
who is in there is a terrorist, that's a known fact ...
"And then his buddies join in: 'We need to murder any person
who's in there, yeah, any person who's in Gaza is a terrorist'
and all the other things that they stuff our heads with, in the
media," Aviv said.
The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) has put the
Palestinian death toll during the war at 1,417 - 926 civilians,
236 fighters and 255 police officers. Israeli officials have
disputed those figures. Thirteen Israelis were killed.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak responded to the IDF revelations
yesterday by repeating Israel's description of its armed forces
as the most moral in the world. The IDF said its judge
advocate-general had ordered an investigation.*
According to a soldier named as Moshe, investigations into
battlefield conduct are not taken seriously.
He said the attitude could be summed up as: "It isn't pleasant
to say so, but no one cares at all. We aren't investigating this.
This is what happens during fighting ... "
*Standard operating procedure: When the focus of media attention is
turned off, the cases are quietly dropped and no one is ever punished.

JERUSALEM - Rabbis affiliated with the Israeli army urged troops heading
into Gaza

religious war, according to the testimony of a soldier who fought in Gaza.
Literature passed out to soldiers by the army's rabbinate "had a clear
message - we are the people of Israel, we came by a miracle to the land of
Israel, God returned us to the land, now we need to struggle to get rid of
the gentiles that are interfering with our conquest of the land," the
soldier told a forum of Gaza veterans in February, weeks after the conflict
ended.
A transcript of the testimony given Feb. 13 at an Israeli military academy
at Oranim Academic College was obtained Friday by McClatchy Newspapers and
also published in Haaretz, one of Israel's leading dailies. The soldier,
identified as Ram, a pseudonym to protect his identity, gave a scathing
description of the atmosphere as the Israeli army went to war.
"The atmosphere in general [was] the lives of Palestinians, let's say, are
something very, very less important than the lives of our soldiers," Ram
said. The religious literature gave "the feeling of almost a religious
mission."
About 1,400 Palestinians were killed during the operation, more than half of
them civilians, Palestinian human-rights groups say.
A soldier identified as Gilad said his battalion commander made clear that
the army was going to use its overwhelming firepower as its protection in
entering densely populated Gaza City.
"He made clear to everyone that one of the most important lessons and one of
the big differences with the second Lebanon war [in 2006] is the way in
which we, the army ... went in with a lot of fire. The surprise wouldn't be
the time, or the way or the place, nothing but a lot of firepower."
McClatchy reported that scores of Palestinians were treated at Gaza
hospitals for burns that may have come from shells containing white
phosphorus, which is illegal to use in heavily populated areas. The issue
came up only briefly at the Oranim conference, when a sergeant in the
paratroops, identified as Yossi, said, "There was a lot of use of white
phosphorus."
Sarit Michaeli of the Israeli human-rights group B'Tselem thinks the public
release of the testimony helped spur the investigation. "There have been
many cases where we have asked the advocate general to look into cases, and
they drag their feet until it gets into the media."
Michaeli said the testimony showed the need for an independent investigation
into Israel's action in Gaza.
"The army and [Atty. Gen. Menachem] Mazuz has claimed all along that the
internal investigations and debriefings are the correct way. This clearly
demonstrates that the soldiers didn't reveal what they did or that they
didn't consider it a problem," Michaeli said.
