Everytime I have upgraded a machine regardless of version, my existing install of tortoise has been destroyed.
After the upgrade I have no shell icons on my existing working copies, and if I create a new working copy
I wont get any icons on those either even tho the right click menus are there.

Because of this happening on multiple machines Ive had to stop using tortoise.  Uninstall reinstall does no good.  Does anyone know of
a way to fix this?

What do you mean with "upgraded a machine"? Did you update TSVN? Or
something else?

If a re-install (uninstall, reboot, install, reboot) doesn't work, you
should check whether some 'security' app isn't interferring with the
registration of TSVN.

Upgrading tortoise.

I have no security apps of any kind running on my machines.
Windows firewall, and all AV software turned off.

This has happened every time I try to upgrade tortoise
regardless of the version of tortoise I am upgrading from or to.
(against my better judgement but I get sick of the nag dialog and give in)

You said that reinstalling doesn't get you the overlays back.
So if that hasn't happened the first time, how did you get them back the
last time you updgraded?

Try uninstalling. Then open the registry editor (regedt32.exe), go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers
and delete all TSVN entries there.
Then install again.

Also, if you have too many entries there, there won't be enough overlay
slots available for TSVN to even show its overlays.

2009/7/4 Bill Culp <mail...@rendion.com>:

Do you also have TortoiseCVS installed, or Microsoft Groove, or
anything else which uses overlays?

No tortoise is the only shell integration as far as icons I have.  I tend to avoid shell integration because of these kinds of issues.
Still havent tried the registry hack that stefan recommended yet, mostly because Im running a facebook app on my desktop and I need
to get it setup as a service before I reboot or do anything that would hose up the users.
